A really lovely hostel. Right next to the beach, sea views wherever you turn, a quick walk from the centre of town and two minutes from the supermarket; in a nice quiet area. Mary is lovely, friendly and welcoming to everyone. The hostel is exceptionally clean and well maintained, everything is thought through- the kitchen had everything you need, there are heaps of washing lines outside, a new BBQ, clean linens, good mattress, large dorm rooms with plenty of storage.

A great stay, would definitely come back.

After making a few poor choices about backpackers in other places in New Zealand I wasn't sure what to expect from Captain Bob's, but as soon as we arrived and met Mary, the new owner, we felt so at home. The facilities were excellent, everything was clean and tidy (the sheets felt and smelt newly washed- not something you get at many backpackers!), the view was INCREDIBLE (9am watching the sailing boats out over the bay I'll never forget), the bed was comfy and the other guests were a great group of fun people from all over the world, a good mix of mostly young people but a few older couples and singles too. We went to Thursday night karaoke with some new friends at a nearby pub and had a blast.
Mary and her partner Jim have only owned it for a month or so but the effort they have put into making it clean and feel like home really shows. Mary has put in plants around the entrance, decorated the walls with beautiful local artworks and cleaned it up. She was also very friendly and relate-able, welcoming us as Australians (unlike a different owner who crossed his fingers and hissed at us when we told him where we were from!!). I would have been happy to stay for much much longer and I would go back there without hesitation. Loved it.

Had a lovely four night stay here. Just off the beach and only 10 minutes from the bus stop. Our dorm had a sea-view, which was lovely. Could hear the waves of a night. Kitchen was clean and spacious, always enough room for people making and eating dinner. Guy on reception was very helpful, helping us book our trips. Plenty of showers/toilets, all very clean. Would happily stay here again, we really enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Our dorm with a sea-view was very nice.

It was clean, the facilities were just right and it was very reasonably priced. I stayed in a female only room with four beds. I met some really amazing women there who made it an experience to remember.
Everyone I met here seemed to understand that part of the charm of the place is how peaceful and relaxed it was. No noisy evenings in other words. This is great because it could disturb other guests due to the layout of the place.
The views from the balcony were wonderful. Breakfast out there was a good as it gets.
Jo, the woman who ran it, made you feel very much at home.
The only thing that would improve my rating to a 5* would be a separate outside area where you could sit and talk into the night.

Clean hostel. Nice view from the balcony in front of the kitchen. Nice and helpful staff. We can recommend it.

My partner and I stayed at Cap'n Bob's for 2 nights. We came in peak season so the car parking was full every night. The first night we had a baby next door so no sleep in for us as the wall between our room and the next was thin. The view from the balcony of the Bay of Islands is amazing! The hostel is a little out of town so it is quieter which we liked. Loved that they gave us a dooner at this hostel!

Stayed for 2 nights in this guesthouse during our trip. Room was clean and comfortable and we had heating blankets to keep us warm while we sleep. You get a sea view from the balcony which is great if it is not raining. Kitchen is of a decent size. Location wise, it is walking distance to supermarket but not many restaurants and bars around. It is also a little too quiet when we were there. There was only 1 other guest and 1 woofer besides us.
