“A must-do experience”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

We booked this tour while on the Queen Mary 2 so had 2 full Waka Taua canoes. We had the perfect day (warm and sunny) to go paddling up the Waitangi River. Our host, Tani, was a 13 year-old who has an extensive knowledge of his heritage, ancient customs, rituals and traditions of his Maori people. We learnt so much from this enthusiastic young man during our two hour paddle in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand. We always enjoy getting off the usual tourist beaten track to immerse ourselves in the local culture and this tour did not disappoint! To paddle a Maori war canoe is something that doesn't happen every day and Tani made sure that it was something we would never forget. Thanks Tani.

“A few warnings”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

If your ambition is to paddle a Waka then as a tourist this may be your only opportunity. A few words of warning – check out how many others will be joining you, it is a far better experience with a full (16 persons) canoe; there were two others in mine and it was altogether very disappointing as 95% of the time we were propelled by outboard motor – check the tide, a low tide it is sometimes not possible to land at the village – your feet will get wet on embarking and disembarking, and the boat will have an inch or two of water in it. Even by Paihia standards an expensive tour so make sure you are going to get the most from it.

“Excellent Experience”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Taiamai Tours was a wonderful experience: going out on a waka (canoe) in the gorgeous setting of Northland. The guides shared traditional stories and introduced us to Maori local heritage. Everyone in the group had a great time.

“A Great Experience - Not to be missed”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

My family and I went on this tour and we can only say good things about it. Not only was it a great experience, we learned a lot and were treated as honoured guests by the guides.

Paddling a Waka War Canoe is not something you can do every day and add to this the knowledge and enthusiasm of the guides then it all adds up to something not to be missed.

“Wonderful experience”
Reviewed January 10, 2013 via mobile

We took this tour a few days ago and loved every second of it. It has the potential to go horribly wrong as we booked late the night before and turns out we were the only two on the morning trip so the hosts found out at 9 am that they had guests arriving at 10 am and many of the staff were away on holiday. Nevertheless, Sunny and Jude made it out and took me and my fiancé on a wonderful waka tour where they went over and above to impart knowledge and provide a wonderful experience for us. It was a true cultural experience and something I will remember for the rest of my life. The photo opportunities were endless. Thanks so much for an unforgettable le afternoon. Arohanui Jo and James
