Darryl's been running his cruiser up the Waitangi River for about 10 years or more.
We shared the ride the past 4 years.
His cruise boat is designed for eating, and his menu defines the experience! It never changes: T-bone steak; lamb, and fish. Plus the starter is always mussels and shrimp.
Consistency is the name of the game; and Darryl does it. Each dish has its own flavour and plenty of it. I like the steak, cooked to perfection and always tender.
Course there are a couple of twists that take getting used to; like Darryl's jokes; funny and consistent. Desert is always fish---chocolate fish.
You can BYOB of wine, beer, whatever, and they pour it for you.
Course the highlight is the stop at the waterfall; where everyone gets a sunset photo for their Facebook. We've got 4 now.

Due to it being my wife's (Chris) Birthday I decided she should have a treat for putting up with me. I booked this cruise because it sounded spectacular, and it was, the only downside was there was only 6 people (guests) on board, but hey, we got the best of attention all the way. My wife took her own wine and they charged $3 corkage, I was supping nice cool beers, throughout the cruise. From the start Mike (Captain) and Jamie his mate, were very attentive and informative.

The cruise take about 3 hours, & so relaxing cruising up the Waitangi river, on the unique "Ratanui" flat bottom boat. Several times in the cruise the boat bottomed out due to the river being so low, but Mike just kept those engines going, and soon got going again.
Virtually the whole way we saw some amazing wildlife, Kingfishers, Shags, Mullet jumping out of the water, and other animals. The comfortable lounge seats are arranged around the edge of the boat which leaves plenty of room to walk about.

To break the ice each guest wears a sailors hat and introduces themselves, a great way to learn about other people, and to find out where they come from in the world. Once that's over you can mingle with the other guest.

The food was amazing, cooked by Jamie and Mike, for starters we had New Zealand Green Muscles, they were huge, also we had Tiger prawns, and toasted Garlic Ciabatta bread, with various dips. Try eating the muscles with Balsamic vinegar.

For the main course I had a T Bone steak, and Chris had NZ Lamb, both cooked to our liking, with boiled potatoes, kumara potatoes, and salad.

Once the food is ready Mike & Jamie slide the tables down from the roof, a great idea to save space. Once the eating has finished, you will be at the harurufalls, ok they are not the highest in the world, but pretty impressive. Mike turns the boat around so the stern is facing the falls, and take photos of you, with your camera/s.

On the return journey it's time to chat to other guests or crew. We along with the other guests really enjoyed the cruise. Yes it is fairly expensive, but special occasions deserve the best.

Well done Darryl for having such a wonderful crew Mike & Jamie, and thank you for a memorable time whilst being in your fantastic Country.

We toured NZ for 5 weeks, starting in the Bay of Islands (Piahia - Pie Here as the crew explained and told a story - true or not it doesn't matter). The crew made the night a memorable one. Creating a funny ice breaker to get people to know each other - having some problems with the lack of water in the river - but continuing to make it all fun. The entree was great, I have never tried NZ Mussels before - they showed us how and they were nice - the prawns were delicious (not quite as good as Aussie tigers) but nice. The mains were cooked in front of us and to order. I had the lamb rump - delicious and NZ rump is certainly better than ours, my wife had a steak - she thought it was OK - the drinks were fine. The falls were made to look their best at night and underneath. They are by no means spectacular from above but the cruise showed them in their best light. We met some lovely people and enjoyed a chat over coffee after the cruise. We met up with one of the couples on another cruise the next day and had drinks with them prior to leaving Piahia. What a wonderful place, stay at Sea Sprays for a really nice stay and great views, especially from the ocean view apartments.

We were a group of 9 that chose this cruise both for food and to see the falls. It was a great way to do both and see the river after spending so much time on the bay. The food was delicious. We started with a buffet of green lipped mussells and prawns. EWveryone stands around and mingles while eating the deliciuos seafood on offer. Then came the main. Cooked fresh, you had your choice of fish, lamb or steak. Cooked exactly how you like it. With that was help your self potaoes kumara, salad and condiments. The waterfalls were amazing. We were taken right up to the falls. The water was crashing on the boat. It is hard to photograph, but I have added some pics for you. Then the boat is turned so that you can have your photo in front of the falls. The crew took those pics with our own cameras. They could have made money by having a photographer on board but we fouind the bay of islands did not over commercialise on anything. This is a great night. There is a bar, great food and great scenerary. It is only about 3-5 hours from memory so not a ate night. We were in slow season so were lucky not to have too many people on board. As you are sitting around lounges around the edge of the boat with tables that come down in front of you. I can see that some times of the year when the boat is full, the experience may not be as comfortable. But do experience it. It was a lot of fun. The crew were so good, really friendly and helpful.
