The pickled parrot is a lovely hostel, just a tiny bit outside the centre of Paihia. The hosts are the friendliest I have even had, they go around talking and getting to know everyone.

There is a central BBQ and I really recommend buying some food and cooking a BBQ - its gas so only takes 3 mins to heat up.

The showers were wonderfully hot and clean.

Only problem - beware, the parrot ate the buttons off my boyfriend's t-shirt!!!! (made for some funny photos...!)

Located within walking distance of shops/ferry/beach, but a little further out than some of the other hostels. Cute parrot and cat greet you on arrival and made the stay more pleasant. Sociable vibe-rooms all surround a central eating/cooking/socialising area. This is nice in some ways, but a total nightmare if you want a quiet night's sleep, which many people do after a hard day's travelling, right? Stayed in 2 different rooms, and didn't sleep at all well. Wooden floors in central area, so you can hear every footstep, only the door to your bedroom between you and the central area, so you can hear everyone's conversation throughout the night. On second night, there was a huge row at 2am in the garden outside the window to our room-two locals in their house next door, drunk, threatening to kill each other-some of us felt very frightened from this.
Good communal cooking area, showers nice and warm, useful laundry facilities available, staff helpful and friendly on the whole. Reasonably priced accommodation and internet access. Just not a great place to stay if you want a quiet night. Some of my friends stayed at Saltwater Lodge and had a quiet night. Some of my other friends stayed at Pipi Patch Hostel and got even less sleep than we did!

The Pickled Parrot is possibly the best hostal I have ever stayed in. We were there twice and stayed in 2 of the rooms and also had a nosey into the dorms. The rooms are spacious, spotless and the linen was also clean and good quaility. The beds look new and are very comfortable. The bathrooms are all communal, which I am not normally that keen on, but these were spotless and roomy. Nothing worse than having not enough space and hooks in the showers but this was great. Lots of hot water too. The comunal areas are large, both inside and outside and an interesting mixed group congregated there. There is TV, DVDs, a stereo, a book exchange, board games, a BBQ etc. The kitchens are well equipped and again, sparklingly clean. Rose presides over the hostal with high sprits, good humour and a mad joie de vivire. She is great. The hostal has another 5 permanent, VIP, residents - the animals. The parrot is bonkers - he miaows like a cat - and will sit on your shoulder; the cat is fluffy and likes being petted, the 2 jack russells, Smartie and Treacle are gorgous, as is Raven, a beautiful old black lab. This is the icing on the cake! Great value for money - especially as breakfast is thrown in for free!

This is a lovely small hostel, really close to all the main parts of Pahia but far enough away to get good sleep. Its a 5 minute walk to the bars, shops and beach. Set back from the road you can read in the garden or chill on the veranda undisturbed by noise. The couple who run it think of lots of helpful extras and free breakfast is a bonus. The bathrooms are clean and the kitchen is well stocked. All the people I met there were friendly and chatty. I would thoroughly recommend this and wouldnt hesitate to go back.

The Pickled Parrot is a lovely backpackers hostel in a quiet area of Paihia close to the beach, harbour and bus stop. I stayed in a twin room and it was clean and comfortable enough. The hostel is quite small but very friendly and owner Rose is really welcoming and helpful (she can help with arranging tours and activities). The common area is large enough, with TV and internet, though the kitchen needs a new cooker. The shower area is also clean and warm. Breakfast and tea and coffee are provided free, which is a nice touch, and the various cats, dogs and parrot (yes there really is one) give it a homely feel.
