“Over rated and disappointing”
Reviewed February 1, 2014

We booked the parrot under the assumption that there would be breakfast provided and a clean room included. We arrived late, the room and the bathrooms were full of spiders and the high ceilings had not been dusted in who knows how long. The double bed was extremely uncomfortable and sagged to the middle and the curtains did not block any light and there were lights directly outside so the room was bright the entire night. We woke up to find a note in the kitchen stating that breakfast was cancelled because people were loud so she didnt give anyone breakfast and we had payed for it. She also did not arrive in the office until 930 even though the office hours began at 830 so we had to wait to check out.

False advertising for the breakfast, entitled staff, uncomfortable room. Go somewhere else.

Room Tip: Dont stay at this backpackers

This is a good base in Paihia, good facilities, clean and found that a twin room was excellent value for money. It's not a big hostel so be prepared to share communal space/wait for shower in the morning. We were a bit frustrated that breakfast isn't put out if the kitchen is left in a mess (we had just arrived late the night before and so had to go out for breakfast). A bit frustrating when it has nothing to do with you but i can kind of see why they do it. It's a 5/10 min walk from the centre of Paihia.

Room Tip: get a twin/double as it's not much more expensive than a dorm bed

My husband and I have been travelling for ten months and I was overwhelmed by the warmth and kindness showed to us by Rose and her family, who happened to be staying over the new year break. The Pickled Parrot is a lovely, friendly place to stay and we have stayed in a lot of hostels! A lovely quiet spot near the beach which is very well equipped with brand new bathrooms, which is always a bonus! Thank you Rose for a fantastic stay. We cannot recommend the Pickled Parrot highly enough.

For the first hostel I've ever stayed in, this really put me off the entire idea! The phone is never answered and the staff is rarely (if ever) around the office/property to speak to. Staff members were also very rude when they were around for about 30 minutes in the morning to clean. The "free breakfast" is only one bland cereal, bread, and butter. Other guests were very rude and loud at all hours. The lack of staff presence meant there was no one around to enforce the rules of being quiet at 10pm and silent at 11pm. We were also miss-booked in, one night short, and had to move to a different room for our final night. Rooms are tiny with very little room to maneuver.

We visited the backpacker as a family for two days and rented two cabins. Toilets regularly ran out of toilet paper, the kitchen was not clean and the promised free breakfast was cancelled without prior notice supposedly because the guests did not leave the kitchen in a clean condition. This backpacker was by far the worst we visited in New Zealand.

This was a fabulous little gem we found. Jungle setting, superb laid back owner and staff, wonderful people... Not advertised on hostel websites so no kids and empty beer bottles kicking around everywhere. Just a lot of respectful, like minded, experienced travellers. Had a wonderful time Thank you.

I cannot recommend this hostel highly enough!!
The Pickled Parrot is literally the ideal place to kick back and relax; and you will struggle to find a more picturesque and idyllic location than The Bay of Islands to unwind and take zillions of stunning photos!

The vibe in the hostel is super-chilled, friendly and welcoming; everyone throughout my 4 night stay seemed to get on really well and have a fun, relaxing time. It is like an oasis of nice people!!

The owner; Rose (+ her 2 dogs; Noodle & Truffle!) is really, really helpful and nice- and the team of hostel helpers keep the whole place very clean and tidy which makes the atmosphere nice for everyone. A simple aspect that I really likes are the very nice showers that feel like a bathroom at home! (very important after a while travelling!!)
The hostel offers free bike hire, breakfast, tennis, internet etc etc - which means you can have a great stay at a very low cost! :)
Thank you Pickled Parrot!! :)
