“Exceeded expectations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2010

We had a devine meal. The food and wine matches were perfect.

The waiting staff were attentive but not intrusive.

We had the tasting menu and each item was freshy and tasty and presented beautifully.

We had a wonderful evening and cannot really fault any of it. We dine out alot (in NZ and internationally) and this was the nicest meal we have had in years

“One of top restaurants in all of New Zealand”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2010

We have been living in New Zealand for 3 months and have toured both the North and South Islands. We have eaten out at many places. This is without a doubt one of the best meals we have had; I would put it on par with Saffron in Arrowtown which has been extensively reviewed by Conde Nash, Cuisine and others. Pacifica is an equally outstanding dining experience but unfortunately this jewel is not as well known. If you are in the charming town of Napier, don't miss the opportunity to sample their menu which changes based on the fresh catch of the day and produce at the local market. Our service was excellent and the food was exceptional.

Loved the decor & the friendly owners. Food was outstanding - gourmet quality, which meant pricey.

“Hugely disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2010

We were expecting greatness from this place after some glowing reviews from a variety of sources but we left feeling underwhelmed and overcharged.

The prices are on par with those of some of the best restaurants we've visited in NZ, including French Cafe and Merediths but sadly the quality of the food did not come close.

We shared an entree of Wagyu porterhouse steak with sauteed paua and chorizo cream which we found to be acceptable if a little dull.

For the mains I ordered the Blue cod with Pork and my wife ordered the Snapper with prawns. My meal was presented in a small clay dish which made for an awkward and cramped eating experience while the food itself was quite tough, dry and bland. The combination of ingredients just did not work well together.

The presentation of the Snapper dish looked fairly amateur and boring, the prawns were cold in the middle and the fish was just ok. Certainly not up to the standard we expect for $42 per main.

We also agreed with a previous reviewer who thought the servings of wine by the glass were somewhat miserly compared with many other restaurants.

Based on the strength of the starter and mains we decided to skip dessert and bailed early. (just as well since our waitress didn't seem interested in taking our dessert order anyway). The bill was $196 for 1 entree, 2 mains a side of beans and 4 glasses of wine.

If you're looking for a quality fine dining experience we would suggest avoiding Pacifica and perhaps visiting one of the many excellent wineries around the Hawkes Bay instead.
