“Delicious cafe, amazing chocolate, awful shop.”
Reviewed March 10, 2013 via mobile

We ate at this cafe for lunch and it was one of the best we've had in New Zealand. The "chocolate extreme" is like eating a cup of hot fudge! I ordered a BLT (topped with brie!) and it was large enough for two people and SO tasty! My partner enjoyed his chorizo risotto and iced coffee as well. The young man who served us was polite and adorable.

As for the shop: We had sampled the chocolates at dinner the night before and they were great. So we were sad when we couldn't fight past the endless tour groups at the shop's tiny counter to buy any. We were ready and willing to hand over money, but after 5 minutes we just gave up. The chocolate's good, but not fight-a-retiree for it good.

“A disappointed Chocoholic”
Reviewed January 24, 2013 via mobile

I arrived at Silky Oak with high expectations.
Upon arrival the staff were friendly and handing out samples of their dark / milk chocolate as you entered. The chocolates on display looked awesome until you saw the prices......where is the value?
$4.30 for a little fancy choc cup or a block of lindt chocolate?
The rows below allowed 7 small chocolates for $9.99.
Again, not alot of value there.
We looked at the prices on the cafe menu and gave it a complete 'miss'.
We thought we would check out the history.....$16 entry price for a couple starting with a craft & sovenior shop upon entry really gave a poor first impression.

If you are in the area take a look.....but otherwise I would give it a miss.

“Food fine, but terrible customer service”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

We called in for lunch at the cafe and to try some chocolate. Ordered a couple of pre-made items from the cabinet, as did not feel we had the time to buy anything that would need to be cooked to order. After waiting more than 25 minutes for the items to be toasted/warmed, we enquired about our order as it seemed we had been forgotten.

Rather than apologise for the delay, the two staff members who spoke to me were very rude and quite confrontational- stating they were busy and that we just needed to wait our turn. We had already seen everyone who had ordered before us be served and leave whilst we were still waiting. And whilst a coach load of people had turned up by this point, they were ordering drinks and eating their own subway sandwiches when I enquired and therefore were not 'ahead of us in the queue'. The staff members response was not only unhelpful it was quite upsetting due to the confrontational tone.

When we bought the items they said they would bring them out shortly- perhaps if they had forewarned us that actually we would need to wait half an hour to have them heated we would have them cold or would have gone elsewhere.

Very disappointing as this was not a reflection of the whole staff team or the quality of the food. From other people's feedback it seems that more staff training on appropriate customer service would be of great benefit to this business. From the responses to customer feedback posted here it seems that learning the power of a simple apology would be the best place to start.

“Huge range of delicious chocolates”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

We visited here on a cruise ship shore tour and were very impressed with the quality of these delicious chocolates and the huge range of chocolate novelties. We were able to sample some of these lovely treats, see the chocolates being made and decorated, visit the interesting museum which described the history of chocolates (loved all the lifelike models in the museum), and enjoy a delicious hot chocolate (purchased in the cafe) before leaving. Prior to the tour bus leaving a young lad handed us all a little package of 2 chocolates each as a thank you for visiting. A special thank you to the staff for making us all feel so welcome!
