“Good motel, bit out of town”
Reviewed January 7, 2010

At The Rocks was a a good motor inn style stop-off on our journey around NZ. Nice family room with good amenties and a good spa bath. Location was a bit out of Napier but there was a good Fish and Chip shop/restaurant nearby (Westshore Fish Cafe) which provide excellent food at a reasonable price. Hosts of At The Rocks were very friendly and helpful, with free Wifi Internet available on request.

Very helpful and informative host. Unusual configuration of rooms. Front door entry is a very small lounge area and had to move the TV from bedroom area and swing it around to watch it from lounge. Bedroom also includes kitchenette with minimal utensils. Bathroom is huge and included a spa. Better than average but not in the very good category based on other accommodation available.

We were a little disappointed with our very modern studio room, which had a kitchenette. Though for those who enjoy spas, the bathroom was almost as big as the rest with what seemd to be a 3 person spa. It is modern style single level motel with corrugated steel theme to exterior. Our room fronted the sidestreet and so we felt the need to set window coverings for privacy that made it a bit dark, even when partially open. Room could have been quieter, as road noise and bed squeak penetrated. Hosts were very helpful with lots of local information, including a recommendation which we fully endorse to the Westshore Fish Cafe, just a short walk out of our room. Apparently rated best fish and chips in NZ, we could agree. We ate in the small cafe, and had two meals of the freshest fish and oysters. Its family owned and Hieke went to special trouble to deal with our request for gluten free meals. A rare treat when travelling. Before recommending the motel to a friend, I would have to advise my reservations.

We stayed in a king room for two nights in November 2007. The complex is in a courtyard shape with parking places in the middle.
The room was spacious with patio doors leading to a private area with table and chairs. The room was clean and comfortable and I thought pretty average for what we had experienced in New Zealand.
What I personally didn't like was the blind between the bedroom and the bathroom (with no glass window or wall) and the blinds on the windows to the front let in a bit of light in the morning. There is also a bit of noise from the main road in the early morning.
We had about a 15 minute walk to a small number of bars/eating places including Speights Alehouse and the Thirsty Whale amongst others. We ate at the Thirsty Whale and I would highly recommend the food here. My husband had the Thai curry which he said was the best he'd ever had. I had a steak which was cooked perfectly. I think there are a couple of eating places a shorter walk away but we didn't try these.
The second night we stayed we got a takeaway delivered which reception were happy to organise. Local menus are provided in the room which was really convenient as we had been on a wine tour in the day and were pretty tired.

  • Liked — Spacious room and menus for take away delivery
  • Disliked — Blind between bathroom and living room

Having stayed at many motels in recent years, it was an absolute pleasure to find such a caring host and immaculate facilities. Nothing was too much bother for the owner and we felt like we were being treated like royalty throughout our stay. The high standard or service was matched by the housekeeping staff who obviously take great pride in their work. The room we occupied was faultless in every way, with attention to detail a credit to the staff. Our room was self contained, although we strolled to the lovely restaurant 100 metres down the road most nights of our stay. Our room was warm, quiet and very well equipped with superior quality chattels. All in all, our visit to Napier was enhanced with the high level of accommodation. Room rates varied but we spent $135.00 and considered this to be excellent value for money.
