In a month travelling around New Zealand, staying in B&Bs, this was one of the two very best we found. The setting is beautiful, tucked in the valley and surrounded by acres of vines from which hosts Jes and Eileen make their own wine. Indeed, so much of what you enjoy here is produced on the premises – jams and juices come from their orchard, bread is home-made, in fact everything is top-notch.
Not least their own sauvignon blanc with which they greet guests every evening on their verandah. Jes and Eileen are fantastic hosts, eager to talk to newcomers and immediately making everyone feel relaxed, involved and at home.
In fact, Esk Valley Lodge was so welcoming that we never stirred out in an evening, preferring to enjoy a bottle of wine in the comfortable lounge and tuck into one of Eileen’s splendid platters which she produces on request.
This was such a happy place to stay that almost everywhere else paled by comparison. So good, you wish you could take it with you.More
