Recently I acquired a voucher for 2 nights at this place .On arriving I thought something was odd and when I walked in , it Hit Me (the Odour), I proceeded to the Reception area which reminded Me straight away of something out of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest " and asked the Fellow behind the desk what this place use to be and sure enough it turned out it had been an Old People Hospital / Rest Home . It had an Eerie , Freaky feeling about it . The Manager quickly showed Me about the place , the Communal Kitchen ,with various furnishings blocking doors ??!, took Me upstairs to the Games Room area , that was Eerie and the Big Hallway up there reminded Me of something out of "The Shining" . Then the Room which He said He had upgraded for Us (We were the only "Guests " there ) ,it was very Average .My Partner came in and She was quite shocked but We decided We,d handle it . The heat pump wasn't working properly and when I asked the Female Manager to come and sort it out ,She did begrudgingly ,got it working ,left the room sighing and 5 minutes later it conked out again ,just as it had done for Me . My Partner got annoyed ,went and saw Her and evidently got told there was a heater in the Games Room area .I'm in Our room hearing all this banging around and my partner turns up with a big oil heater She had lugged down stairs which She said had been Scary ! Next day We moved on FAST ! I went to Reception ,same Female there ,told Her We weren't staying another night and She just looked at Me blankly ,didn't say a word .We headed off to a Motel on Marine Parade for another night of Luxury ! A Terrible Experience We had at The Parkside Lodge .Isn't there enough Motels in Napier without this one !But there's More ...?!

Dear TripAdvisor readers,

Like any business we are pleased to receive constructive, fair feedback which we will endeavour to take on board despite the fact that it may occasionally contradict our efforts and the experience of the other thousands of guests we have welcomed - as the vast majority of our reviews will testify.
We do in life however, occasionally encounter individuals with a perspective so far removed from reality that we must emotionally respond to these comments a little more harshly that we would normally simply to defend our business. As the manager, I was "the fellow" that welcomed these guests. Obviously like them, my first impressions were not great. The booking was made via an intoxicated phone call and upon arrival I met somebody of questionable appearance with a cigarette hanging out behind an ear, and a rude, blunt return greeting. Fine by me, we welcome all types and often first impressions are wide of the mark. The tour of the premises referred to would not cover all areas of the lodge if we we were not extremely confident in our premises. Some moteliers simply hand over a key and point down a hall. The lodge was not a rest home in a former life as this guest has convinced himself of, but was around a decade ago one half of a private hospital which my father built, owned and operated. My father retired from his profession and the rooms have since been lovingly refurnished and grounds painstakingly transformed into a cosy, unique setting which the images on our website can assist with. We take pride in this transformation. Most buildings have a history preceding their current inhabitants and we have one more unique than most. I can only imagine the "odour" you refer to is one of pristine cleanliness and simply unfamiliar to you. We have 151 reviews on Booking.com that have marked us 9.5/10 for cleanliness and the same clear trend is obvious from honest reviewers on TripAdvisor. The lodge was indeed quiet when this guest was there, as it is mid-winter, but certainly not empty as he has once again convinced himself of in his private dream world. We are indeed pleased to offer such a peaceful setting. In regards to the air conditioning, we regret the impression of impatience, but our receptionist Michelle was not met with the most cordial of welcomes each time she attempted to explain how an air conditioning unit works. It takes a few minutes before it blows out hot air as it has to reach it's desired temperature internally first. Once these instructions were twice ignored and she returned to find the guests had turned the controls to a cooling fan setting, she did the logical thing and offered to bring down a simple-to-understand oil heater to ensure the guests had warmth in their room and would cease their audible arguments with each other.
We regret that we cannot meet the expectations of all our guests, but like everybody we are entitled to a fair hearing. We sensed these guests disappointment by their show of hair dye being splattered across the bathroom door and vanity, and the strewn liquor bottles and cigarette butts across the room. There are indeed many more motels in Napier, all of which are available at a higher tariff than ours. This is primarily due to our lodge being new, and with our energy and commitment to doing the housework, maintenance, and day-to-day running all ourselves. Parkside Lodge offers affordable, clean and comfortable accommodation with experienced and welcoming service. We would kindly ask intelligent readers to look behind the uneducated mumblings of one reviewer and refer to the gracious words of the majority. If any reader has concerns or comments before booking with us, we would be delighted to talk them through what we offer with confidence and pride.

We stayed as a grab one deal for two nights, 5th of july, we loved everything parkside lodge had to offer, from its retro image, to the friendly welcoming we had. The only thing we were disappointed with was our bed. It was so hard we both had a terrible sleep and woke most of the night with sore hips. [Room 23] . Apart from this we would defiantly come back to stay,[ will ask for a compfy bed).

Green soon to be married.

Dear Soon to be married,
Thank you for the very kind review. We're glad you enjoyed the majority of your stay with us. We regret the bed was not to your liking. As you can imagine, mattresses are quite a personal preference, so in selecting the style we have in the lodge we went with the majority - which is for a medium-firm mattress from a well-recognised brand. These are very new and until now have been very popular. Upon your next stay we'll be pleased to see if we can source an alternative. All the best with your exciting year ahead.

You might not expect it from the outside, but this is a great place to stay. It starts with a warm welcome by the friendly couple who runs it. The music they play in the lobby is just one of the details which makes this place special. So are the free cookies and the table tennis room.

The rooms are very clean, straightforward and comfortable.

Very happy to have found Parkside Lodge . Sateesh and Prue are really friendly and welcoming . We just LOVED the quirky 'kitsch' decor .. the Louis Armstrong LP playing in the foyer, the funky little nick nacks and retro furniture . It gives the place a homeliness , character and a light hearted fun that is hard to find these days amongst mostly sterile motel rooms and accomodation . .. and the place is VERY clean .. Rooms are comfortable and all you need . I wish Sateesh and Prue all success in this venture and hope you see you both again soon at Parkside Lodge

Dear Buddhi, we truly appreciate you taking the time to write such a lovely review. We have enjoyed setting up Parkside Lodge as being "a little different" to most motels and it is exactly that warmth, homeliness, and character we have been striving for. It's always pleasing to see the little touches appreciated and we hope we can welcome you back in the future with continued improvements planned for our lodge.

Certainly not what was expected. brought the accommodation. on a deal expected an average place to stay, however from moment we arrived you felt welcomed by the owner. Alot of work has gone into making this an ideal place to stay. only downside is that you need a vehicle as it is a long walk to the Napier CBD. Other than that everything else is very positive i.e close to super market, very quiet. Will certainly considder staying again next time in the Hawkes Bay

Dear Henderal,
Thanks for the great review. Regarding our location, we do feel it's worth travelling by car to get the best out of beautiful Hawke's Bay. Our lodge is located centrally for easy access to the city, but also to the nearby wineries, rivers and beaches, sports grounds, golf courses, and parks. We have a bus stop right outside our door for regular services to Napier, Taradale, and Hastings, and we are pleased to announce we have recently added bike rental to our repertoire. We hope we do get the chance to welcome you back soon.

The place is absolutely lovely and it's the best room we had during our 2 weeks holiday in NZ. The room may be compact in size but it was clean, cozy making you feel just right at home. The communal kitchen was very well equipped. You can cook up anything here. Best of all, the lodge is located in a housing area with a nearby lake and park. Serenity at it's best!

We turned up to Parkside lodge and we're greeted by a friendly couple which I assume were the owners they were easy to deal with and very informative, we were shown around and told of the coffee machine and home made baking that was available in the kitchen. The room was very clean and tidy albeit very much no frills. The shared facilities were clean tidy and we'll maintained. The only downside was the noise, if you are a light sleeper you may struggle a bit with the walls and floors seeming awfully thin. Other than that very comfortable accommodation at a great price.

Dear Craig,
Thanks for the great review. Our lodge was designed to be simple, clean, and affordable yet with generous facilities and special individual touches. You have managed to describe that very well for us in your comments. We apologise for the noise during your stay. We are blessed with a quiet, peaceful, suburban setting, and we do try and designate rooms as carefully as possible to avoid noisy neighbours, but we regret that for your stay there were some issues. Thanks for the feedback.
