“Great value - grab it now”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

It's just a 10 minute drive from the quaint downtown of Napier, and you do know that it was formerly a private hospital by the wide corridors, but it's really very pleasant, safe, and clean. The host was very helpful (bringing up a little table and extra chair so we could play cards in our room). "Perfectly adequate" doesn't do it justice, but comes close. I'm sure in a few years it will have more amenities and cost more, but I'd suggest that you grab it now. Great value.

Dear Gasngo,

Thanks for your lovely feedback. Value for money was our major goal as we set out on this venture, so to have comments like this from such well-travelled globetrotters is much appreciated. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip.

This place is simple, but simply it does everything really well. Yes, it's former purpose can be guessed by the nature of the room layouts, but this doesn't take away from what is a lovely setting in suburbia.

Staff really friendly and helpful. Characters, and gave good advice as to where to go and what to see in Napier.

It is a little way from the centre (we had a car), but I understand the local buses get you around pretty well.

If Napier is included on your travels you really can't go wrong staying here.

Room Tip: If quiet time, ask at reception.

On a recent annual pilgrimage to Napier, we chanced our arm at booking a room at Parkside for 2 nights. It was perfectly adequate for what we required. Host and staff were charming and accommodating and the rooms and facilities were spotlessly clean. Parking was good, security good too. Kitchen was tidy and homely. Nice music playing in entrance hall and nothing was instrusive or noisy. Well done you guys!!

My wife, 2 young children and myself loved our stay at Parkside Lodge. The rooms were spotlessly clean and comfortable and the proprietors went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The lodge has a great little kitchen well suited to our needs and the petanque court is a nice touch. It was a lot closer to Napier town than we had thought and the proprietor had some great suggestions on places to visit in the area. A classy little outfit, our kind of place.

SaturdayPete,
'Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad your family had a pleasant stay. Thanks also for utilising the petanque court, it has had very little use despite the magnificent Hawke's Bay sunshine. See you next time.

Very clean but no disguising this is a modern nursing home converted to a hotel. Don't pay extra for a Deluxe Garden View room on Booking.com as there is no garden! Bathroom was a wet room in both senses of the word as the shower soaked the whole floor despite the curtains. No kettle in the room - so you have to walk to the shared kitchen for a cuppa. It's quite a long way from the town centre so you'll need a car

Dear 121Interview Coaching,

Thank you for taking the time to offer your feedback on your recent stay with us. Although we are pleased with your comments regarding our friendly nature and our cleanliness, we do find it disappointing to find aspects suggesting misleading advertising or questionable value. Our Garden Rooms have been extremely popular in summer and this was the first negative comment we received about their outlook. We do have two of these rooms that are at most a four metre distance from the lawn and gardens we have planted, but these two rooms have usually proved just as popular due to the opportunity to have your car at a more convenient location. This seems to be very important to a lot of travellers used to the motel culture of smaller New Zealand cities. We have however amended our title for these rooms to "Courtyard Rooms" so as not to risk any further disappointment. Our mission with Parkside Lodge has always been to provide five star service at an affordable rate. To make our rooms as reasonably priced as they are our room amenities are basic but we have provided complimentary items in our kitchen instead: coffee and tea, oven and microwave, fridge and freezer, weekend home baking, fresh herbs for cooking, and a dining table and breakfast bar. Based on recent requests we have also amended our Courtyard Rooms to include individual coffee making facilities, but naturally this results in a slight increase to our rates. Our rates do remain however substantially lower than any other establishment in Napier and we welcome you to do any of your own investigation if you feel you were somehow overcharged for what we delivered.

Indeed, as you suggested, our building was once a private hospital. This has presented some challenges which we are certain are well reflected in our rates. The wet rooms are a feature of the building's former use and on the positive side are designed to be kept impeccably clean and up to hospital standards, and although they do get "wet" we service these rooms and change all towels daily. The former use of the building has also presented many welcome features such as superior fire rating, individual air conditioning for each room, wide hallways, and excellent lighting. We have taken many steps to also provide Parkside Lodge with its own identity with restored vintage vinyl players, scattered bird art, 'retro' furniture and ornaments, and daily picked flowers that has drawn many favourable comments from our guests. As for our location, as advertised we are in Greenmeadows which is a short five minute drive from the city centre, but as a result much closer to the wine region, scenic beaches, golf courses, and fruit picking which we find most of our guests have a preference for whilst visiting our beautiful area. We are also just across the road from a scenic three-hectare park which is a great additional feature for us here. I am happy to respond personally to any of your issues with your stay. Feel free to contact me directly at sateesh.krishnayya@parksidelodge.co.nz or +64 6 8442700.

Recently opened. Really nice and modern, seemed a mix of hotel and hostel - would suit both types of travelers. Nice private clean room with ensuite, communal kitchen so could make food if wanted. Really friendly staff. Quiet when we stayed. Short ten min drive out of Napier town centre in nice residential area. Very good value for money.

The hostess must of had other things on her mind as she wasnt helpful or accomodating at all. I was shocked to get to our room and it was hot and stuffy and terribly small- some may call its size cosy but I disagree. She didnt explain anything to me about the facility- obviously expecting me to be a mindreader. On the upside- the bed was very comfy and warm and the ensuite was ok despite everything getting wet whilst showering. The off street parking was a joke as was the free wifi. We stayed here for 2 nights and on the second night returned to the lodge and had to leave our rental car on the road as the carpark was full. I awoke early-5am each morning as I didnt know or see the blackout curtains were behind the sheer net curtains until the morning we were leaving- thank you. Seriously who does that?? Hang drapes behind sheers like really!! The air condition unit was pathetic. I left the unit on when we went out for dinner and came back and our room was worst than when we left. And as for promoting yourselves as being "across the road from Anderson Park"- the path walkway is unkempt and quite scary even during daylight hours. Sorry but for my daughter and I this place although tidy made our short holiday get off to a bad start. I will not recommend Parkside Lodge and I will not be back. Hospitality and people skills lacking.

Dear Nena P,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. As Managers of the Lodge, my wife and I were shocked and very upset to read about your experience. We pride ourselves on our service and have developed a great reputation for it as you will see in all our other reviews on this site and others. We regret one of our team did not make such an impression, as many of the elements you have mentioned would have been easily rectified if we could have shown you at the beginning, or if any of these issues had been brought to our attention during your stay. My wife and I are on site basically 24/7 and when we are away from the desk we leave a sign stating how we are easily contactable. We were not made aware of any of the issues you described as being unsatisfactory which is a shame as we can always find a solution. We have more than one car space per room and if there did not appear to be space at the front of the lodge, we have sufficient extra parking at the rear. The air conditioning is in perfect order and I have been back to your room to check this - perhaps we could have addressed this with the room orientation better, but we do leave additional operating instructions in our in-room guide which is available in every room. We have access through the Lodge to Kennedy Rd and hence Anderson Park rather than taking the garden path. We must admit that path was in need of some attention and has since been trimmed back and re-planted, but this was simply a gardening need. Our location is very safe and this path is well utilised. I am not sure what your concern was with the free wi-fi, but it is free, it is quick, and we offer more capacity than all our competitors. Our curtain set up is designed that way for aesthetic purposes as much as anything, the drapes are used more than the curtains and your room with its view of the Westerly hillside does attract a fair degree of sunshine. I wish we could have offered you an upgrade to a Deluxe or Garden Deluxe Room during your stay, as the Standard room that you booked is a little bit smaller however we certainly don't feel we misrepresent ourselves with the size of the room. The rate offered during your stay was $68/night which is at least $20 lower than any other motel in the area. Our rooms are basic, but we have the facilities throughout the lodge to make up for this, and this is reflected in our generous rates.
Rest assured your feedback has been discussed with our team for future improvements. We wish we had the opportunity to welcome you back in the future to show you a more true reflection of our service culture at Parkside Lodge, but I do encourage you to contact us directly on +64 4 8442700 or sateesh.krishnayya@parksidelodge.co.nz if you wished to discuss your experience further.

Best wishes,

Sateesh & Prue Krishnayya
