Owner description: Takaro Trails, self guided cycle tours of the Hawke's Bay Trails, 187km of off road cycle trails which form part of Nga Harenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail. The trails are the perfect way for visitors to visit our world famous wineries, enjoy some gentle exercise under sunny skies and explore our stunning scenery at their own pace. Takaro is the Maori word for 'play' so put some fun into your Hawke's Bay stay and get out and about by bike!

Beautiful ride along Westshore coast, through wetlands and a beautiful Eucalyptus tree stand. The trail is in excellent condition and easy to follow. Takaro Trails made it easy---bike, helmet, water bottle, map and riding directions. This is a totally flat ride, which everyone can enjoy.

The Water Trail North ride is perfect for people short on time as it is only about 2 hours round trip from our new base in Ahuriri. It's a really scenic route with a great coffee stop option at the Bay View Snapper Cafe!

We were recently on holiday in the Hawkes Bay for a friends wedding and had a day up our sleeve for something fun. I decided to organise for a group of 7 of us to do a winery day cycle. We did the Takaro Trails 'Havelock North and Cape Coast Wineries' - 16km one way day cycle which was an absolute blast!

We varied in cycling skill level but as it was self guided tour we just took our time taking in the stunning scenery. The limestone pathways made for a very easy and flat ride but also beautifully scenic. Having never done a cycling tour we were all pleasantly surprised at how fun it truly was and not that strenuous, was actually a relaxing day. Most of us opted to wear jandals and dresses… just to show how ridiculously cavalier we were and this cycle was great! We started at 11am and were picked up at 4pm which was perfect for our meandering pace. I can't wait for the next one! Such a fun thing to do as a group.

The tour was so well organised. The directions were easy and the bikes were great for us all. They were all named and lined up waiting for us on arrival with complimentary water. We had a quick briefing session, checked bikes and helmets suited us all and then into Black Barn for our first tasting! (loved the pinot gris) We started at Black Barn Vineyard and were picked up at Te Awanga Estate. The wine tastings were great and we decided to spoil ourselves at Elephant Hills with a delectable cheese platter for afternoon tea, just divine. We enjoyed 4 out of 7 vineyards on our cycle which was perfect for us. A few delicious bottles were bought along the way that Jenny and the team would quite happily collect for us if we didn't want to carry them in the bike Panniers (which are quite spacious) or we decided to buy a case!

We have another wedding in April so will definitely be getting this group to do a Takaro Trails itinerary as well. Such a great way to spend a day in the Hawkes Bay.

Last Saturday we spent our staff Christmas Function with Jenny and her assistants from Takaro Trails on this fun filled day of cycling, wine tasting and lunch at Clearview Estate. Every last detail was organised to perfection. The bikes were easy to ride and even those who had not ridden a bike for many years did not have any problems. Helmets, hi viz vests and water bottles were provided. Our accommodation at the Crown Hotel in Napier was excellent too and also organised by Jenny.
I would thoroughly recommend Takaro Trails to anyone looking for a fun corporate team building day or for a family or friends get together.

What a fabulous relaxed Xmas function our group of 20 enjoyed last weekend. We experienced four very different vineyards, sampled some exceptional wine and feasted on delicious local produce. The cycling was most enjoyable and Takaro Trails provided full support for the day, which was very much appreciated. Jenny and her team were very friendly, efficient and competant - we look forward to returning in the near future to ride some of the other itineries on offer. Keep up the good work!

Jenny from Takaro Trails organised the most amazing day for our group from Duncan Realty Ltd Rotorua. We were a group of 20, mixed ages and gender and of different skill levels when it came to bike riding. The whole operation runs like a well oiled machine and nothing is a problem. Jenny and her team had our transport accommodation and our meals and wine tastings all pre booked for the day, all we had to do was turn up. A few of the early arrivals enjoyed the Black Barn Farmers Market before we all started our first tasting at the Black Barn Vineyard after being issued with our helmets and instructions for the bikes which are very easy and comfortable to ride and even have pannier bags to put your gear in. Then it was a short 2km ride to the the Te Mata Estate Vineyard all the while followed by a support van which we could get on at any time and stow the wine in which we purchased along the Trail. We enjoyed the off road, scenic ride on the limestone trail following the Tuki Tuki River. Fabulous scenery along the way and lots of laughs had by all. After a distance in total of 16km we arrived at Clearview Estate Winery for another tasting followed by a great 2 course meal. We were all seated outside under a canopy of trees on a long banquet table in a beautiful setting. Our last short ride was to the amazing Elephant Hill Vineyard where we had the most informative tasting and enjoyed the spectacular surroundings. A coach arrived to pick us up and we reluctantly boarded to be transferred back to our hotel. Everybody had such a great day we didn't want it to end! So if you want a well organised fun filled day for your next staff function, or indeed a great day with friends and family book Takaro Trails. We can thoroughly recommend it and will be back soon try the unguided experience with family.
