completely apalling, the room costed us so much and we didn't even get a decent TV (to distract us from the non-seaviews from our windows). Furthermore, when we walked into the dining room for breakfast and we realised we had to pay 22 dollars each for a bite of toast and watery coffee, we simply decided NEVER AGAIN. For your own good, don't stay there

the first feeling i got as soon as we step in the room was like this is RIP OFF. the room interior look like and fake antique and worn out.
the shower worked like back in the 1930"s
i even asked the staff how its possible this hotel was 5 stars. 2 stars in europe style
the breakfast was worst i ever seen for 22$

A very overrated hotel. As per other reviewers, I stayed here on the basis of guidebook reviews and was very disappointed.

The room was perfectly decent, if dated. However, the biggest disappointment was the food in the dining room which was mediocre from start to finish. In particular, the bread roll I was served was without doubt the heaviest and doughiest bread roll I have ever had the misfortune to experience. Service was also patchy and unsmiling.

I got the feeling that there was little competition in Napier and that they were therefore resting on their laurels. It certainly wouldn't take much to give them a run for their money. Avoid.

My wife and I stayed here for one night in January 2005. This is a lovely old hotel with plenty of character. One of the few buildings in Napier to survive the earthquake in 1931, the hotel is situated in a quiet part of Napier, but only a few minutes stroll to the centre. Service was excellent, the staff being particularly helpful. I understand all the rooms are different, our bedroom was small but furnished in a style in keeping with the era of the building, plus a TV and mini-bar. The bathroom was nice but particularly small, with a sliding door into the bedroom to save space. The best feature of the hotel was its restaurant, worth dining here even if you’re not staying at the hotel (make a reservation). Our dinner was excellent and our breakfast, cooked to order, was far and away the best we had on our 5-week’s trip. A nice touch was the decanter of port left out for guests in the library, an elegant way to finish the evening. A lovely way to see Napier, but given the size of the bedroom, we really wouldn’t have wanted to stay much more than one night.

Based upon guidebook reviews (a big mistake), we stayed at the County Hotel. For what we paid for a room, I really expected much more. Our room was very narrow and small, overlooked a main street and was just "long in the tooth".

The County Hotel in Art-Deco Napier is a jewel in the middle of a jewel of a town and the best wine in New Zealand. Hawkes Bay is the wine afficienado's dream and this hotel is terrific. High ceiling and air conditioned. The restaurant is one of the best in town. Try not to get a room that overlooks the street as the native's tend to celebrate at all times and sometimes the singing late at night is annoying. There are 40 some wineries within a short drive and I wish we had spent a week instead of 3 days. The drive from Taupo is about 3 hours and somewhat tedious but worth it when you arrive.

Stayed here in August, 2004. The hotel is very period-accurate: I felt like I had walked into a 1920s horror movie! The rooms were sparse and the fixtures were a poor-to-moderate retrofit. I undersand the need to respect historic architecture while renovating. But this hotel could seriously use another renovation. So if you're looking for luxury, don't come here! Also, our bed coverlet was suspiciously stained. Ew.
