I love this hotel! Napier is known for it's art deco decor and ambience. The County Hotel offers a trip back to timeless elegance and an opportunity to pretend you are there back in the day. The staff are so friendly obviously happily employed by Chris and Angie. I will be staying there at least once a month because their service is magnificent, the rooms are opulent and the food sends me happily content to bed. I can't say enough about my stay at The County Hotel...it is truly one of my favorite places to stay. Btw...ask to stay in The Huia room! All the rooms are furnished different. The Huia you will thank me for! Xxx

Finally made it back to the Hawkes Bay and stayed at the County Hotel.
it was the perfect place to stay.
Such a beautiful building, with style and atmosphere.
Loved our room, we had a large room with a fantastic spa bath. much appreciated after a long hot day playing golf.
The Hotel has its own bar, Churchills, great spot to relax outside in the Hawkes Bay sun and had some fantastic food in the restaurant.
The staff were nice and friendly and made some genuine efforts to assist us when it came to enjoyng our time in Napier.
we will definitely be back, maybe when the town isnt so busy, a nice winter break.

Room Tip: we stayed in Ruru, large Spa bath and very quiet.

A beautifully restored hotel with very comfortable rooms. Ate in the restaurant and had a gorgeous meal. Staff friendly and attentive. If I ever go back to Napier I will definitely stay there. Located very close to sea front and all main sites.

I recently enjoyed my third stay at The County Hotel in Napier. As always the whole experience was an absolute delight. The rooms are superbly appointed, the staff helpful and attentive and dinner at Chambers restaurant an experience not to be missed. Is it's 5 start rating justified? Absolutely!

My wife and I stayed three nights at the County Hotel last week in one of their delightful rooms for our wedding anniversary, our room was called Mockie. Upon our arrival we were given a complimentary cocktail in Churchill’s bar which set the mood for our stay I must say.
Mockie had a spa bath was double glazed (we relished the space, peace and quiet) and air conditioned which was a must as temperatures were up to 33 degrees in the heat if the day.
We did the usual Art Deco tours where we were introduced to The New Zealand Wine Centre and enjoyed two "flights" around the different vineyards of Hawkes Bay from the air-conditioned comfort of their cinema another MUST DO!
In the Evening we dined in the County's restaurant Wine Street and went back every evening as the food was outstanding. We met a lot of locals in Churchill’s Bar and would recommend the County Hotel to anyone who wants a special place to stay in the centre of Napier.

Located just on the edge of the Art Deco centre of Napier, which has to be one of the most interesting cities in the world for it's concentration of low rise Art Deco buildings as a result of a devastating earthquake in 1931 that destroyed most of the city forcing a rebuild, just as Art Deco was all the rage in the western world.

This hotel was just one of two large buildings to survive that earthquake so it pre-dates the Art Deco craze. It has only been a hotel since 1990 but it looks like it's been one forever. The interior is very stylish early 20th century and you could feel like you have stepped back in time 100 years - in a pleasing sort of way. The amenities are modern with a touch of semi old fashioned charm like the Marilyn Munroe telephone in the room.

There's lots of native Rimu wood in the furniture and fit-out which seems most appropriate. They have a fine, small restaurant which serves excellent food and wine plus a small intimate bar that just fits the whole scene beautifully.

With such an old building it is inevitable that there will be noise from other rooms, squeaky floors, loud closing doors and stairs with squeaks, but somehow this just adds to the atmosphere and authenticity. Our room had a choice of air conditioning, ceiling fan and generous opening windows for fresh air.

The owners claim a 5 Star rating but I'm not sure that it meets that criteria in my mind when compared to hotels overseas, but since there is no standard measurement for "Stars" then I guess they are entitled to claim it.

I thought it was exceptional value for what we got. The evening meal was excellent and the service good.

Service from the staff is what you'd expect from a small boutique-type hotel - friendly and personal.

An interesting bonus was the 1969 Daimler parked outside that was once owned by the Government and used to cart the Queen and her kids around in the last 3 decades of the last century as well as a host of other dignitaries. It was unlocked and according to the sign on the window, you were welcome to take a seat in it and imagine it's history and the bums that once sat there. (For American readers, a bum here is what you call a fanny)

Being so close to all that Napier offers - and being a part of that offering in itself - I would highly recommend the place for its location, class, history, service and value. Top marks from me.

The hotel envelopes you with warmth as soon as you walk into the foyer. Excellent location to Napier CBD and the off street car-parking is a bonus. Extremely well appointed rooms, cheerful, friendly and very tolerant room staff backed up by equally cheerful and helpful staff in both reception and the bar. Host Chris is a caring, fun-loving fellow where nothing is too much trouble. The fact he greets each guest by name is a reminiscent of the more personal days gone by - not the faceless number you seem to be to many bigger establishments. If you are looking for a good night's sleep in stylish surroundings and everything within an easy walk, then the County is the Hotel for you.
