“Beautiful, Very Comfortable and Pleasant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2010

The basics: very clean and well run with great decor, a good location (with lovely views), spacious rooms, very comfortable beds and good customer service. The pictures of the hotel on their web-site are representative – this is a beautiful, modern and well appointed hotel with nicely sized and quiet rooms. The beds were comfortable (amongst the top 3 from a 3 week visit in New Zealand). Laundry facilities are available, clean and easy to use. Finally, as two friends travelling together we tried to get a two double bed configuration wherever possible - this configuration is offered by Scenic and the double beds are real and comfortable doubles (not singles pushed together with an uncomfortable ridge/gap down the middle as we found in other places). We stayed at two Scenic chain properties during our vacation in New Zealand and were impressed by both – they are clearly well run and well maintained. On the basis of the two we stayed at I would happily try the other hotels in the chain.

We enjoyed a one night stay in early April. Our room was on the top floor and was quite spacious, with 2 beds and a small dining table. Great views over the waterfront. Plenty of car parking at the rear. Great location, close to "downtown" and several food choices within a short walk including a Hogs Breath Cafe right next door. Didnt hear any (significant) traffic noise during our stay. Room was fitted with a split sytem air con, despite reports in previous reviews.
Would definately stay here again and would not hesitate in recommending it to others.

Stayed at this hotel for one night as part of trip in the North Island heading up to the Bay of Islands. Napier is a beautiful large town with lots to do and see. The hotel is in a great location on Marine Parade with only a five minute walk to the main shopping part of town with bars and cafes. Our room was on the 6th floor so we had great views of the Ocean (which was still a bit choppy following the aftermath of the recent Chilean earthquake). Staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was included in our rate which was served in their restaurant on the first floor looking out onto the ocean. There was a great selection and very tasty. Would love to go back to Napier again and would definitely stay at the Te Pania again.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here, or at any of the other hotels along Marine Parade. The reason? The heavy trucks carrying phospates and containers to and from the port of Napier, a couple of miles up the road. These use Marine Parade, the seafront road where many of the hotels are situated. These trucks are not an occasional nuisance; I timed them in mid-afternoon, and counted one every 20 seconds on average in one direction or the other. There were fewer in the night, but the night porter told me that if a boat has arrived at the port the trucks can be at their heaviest between 2am and 5am.

You cannot, of course, blame the hotel for this. It is a modern, stylish, comfortable place. But it seems incomprehensible that the local authority allows one of Napier's two main industries to so seriously damage the other. Why do they not require these trucks to use the - admittedly longer - by-pass? For many visitors like me, the lasting memory of Napier is that of heavy trucks thundering past the windows of their hotel - such a shame, for it's otherwise an interesting and charming town.

We stayed on the six floor in a lovely spacious suite with great views of the ocean. The hotel is in a great location just a street away from the main shopping/eating areas. The hotel is very modern and had hard wired broadband to the rooms and wifi in the public areas. I would have expected this to be free and wireless throughout for a hotel of this standard. The breakfast was good although we only had it as it was included when booking. The gym is good and just across the road, we would definately recommend the outdoor pool/spa attached to the gym which you have to pay $7 entry for but it was fab. Two pools one at 36 degrees and the other at 38 brilliant when travelling on your own or with children. We would stay there again.

The hotel was on the Napier seafront, very close to the shopping centre (2 minutes walk). The hotel had an on-site restaurant, and free use of a nearby gym. The room had tea & coffee-making facilities and hard-wired broadband internet - wifi is only available in public areas. All rooms overlook the seafront with varying ocean views.

Our room was spacious with a King bed, & plenty of drawer and wardrobe space. This was one of the few hotels with a luggage bench for two cases in the room. The TV was old-style (not flat-screen) with 8 channels including several from SKY. The room had air conditioning - essential for east-facing rooms with floor-to-ceiling glass front wall.

The check-in staff were pleasant and helpful. The hotel was more expensive than most other motel-style properties which had more space. The price premium is presumably for the hotel's central location, but we still feel that it is a little expensive, given the lack of some features already mentioned.

The hotel has plenty of free on-site parking for guests behind the property - very good for a city centre hotel. We would expect a hotel of this standard and price to have free, in-room wifi internet. One small niggle - the hot water tap in the bathroom was stiff and did not change the water temperature promptly.

The hotel is situated right on Marine Parade and is about 2 minutes walk from town so the location is excellent.
Rooms are nice and comfortable and all have good sea views and there is ample free safe parking at the back of the hotel.
Directly across the road is a pool complex which you have to pay to use but also has a gym which if you are a hotel guest can use for free.
Overall this hotel is nice without being outstanding and if you avail of some of the promo rates going which can get down to about NZ$125 a night is is pretty good value for Napier.
We would return here.
