2nd time I have visited here and didn't enjoy it as much as the first. Our first visit was a guided tour through the prison, which was much better than the 'audio tour' where you have a recorded dialogue to listen to via a handheld device. Quite boring compared to the previous visit. Having a guide was much better, gives you a chance to ask questions and chat amongst the others in your group.

When my sister and I visited we were at first very impressed by the large imposing front wall that lead us to believe we were in for something special. Once inside the one person that worked there that day explained to us how the audio tour worked, told us where to begin our tour and took our $20 each.
I am sure that there are some great stories to be told here and would have loved to have found out more information but only got little snippets from the audio system provided. It is really unfortunate that there are parts of the prison that have been turned into a back packers hostel as the large commercial washing machines and rubbish left around the place detract from the experience.
Many of the cells are locked away for 'staff only' and much of the place is so poorly lit that it is impossible to have a good look around.
All in all an interesting visit but it felt like it lacked some authenticity due to the back packer situation and the constant references to past reality shows that had been made there became a bit tiresome.
Would recommend if you were struggling to find something to do but $20 is a bit steep for this tour.

We took the self-guided tour and really enjoyed being able to move around at our own pace. Prison was clearly somewhere you would not want to be in those days and surprised about how recently it was closed. The prisoner stories and the earthquake damage very interesting too. And the hanging yard brought up all the hairs on the back of my neck. The guard cat kept us under survellience for the entire tour and duly escorted us out. Felt a bit odd seeing the backpackers that live there using the showers and kitchen-not sure I would want to stay there-very cold and a little creepy-but they seemed happy enough with the accommodations and very friendly.

We hadn't heard of this and picked up a leaflet at the Isite - but it was one of our Napier highlights, especially with the 12 and 15 year-olds. Quirky tourist stop but definitely one to do.

Napier prison is the oldest prison in NZ and the site has been kept original! I opted for the self guided tour and listened to the English and Mandarin tours. Both were exceptional and I could listen to the tour at my own pace. There's no one to rush me and took my time to observe the details of the prison. Perfect place to visit for someone who loves history.
