We booked into this restaurant for a meal before seeing a movie at the quaint cinema next door. The restaurant looked like it should be interesting and the menu attracted us. We didn’t look at TripAdvisor reviews before dining, but when I did I’m amazed that it is 19 out of 130 restaurants in Napier. The others must be amazing!!
As you may guess by now, we were impressed with all aspects of our dining experience.
We started with the Arancini balls which had a slightly Middle Eastern flavoured sauce. Quite different from those we have had before, but it worked very well and I applaud the chef for thinking a little outside the square.
For mains my wife had pork belly with a celeriac mound and I had venison with vegies and a beetroot sauce. Well the pork belly was perfection, the meat was cooked just right, still very moist and the “skin” was the one of the most crispy we have had without being dried up. The celeriac mound was very good too. The venison was up there with numerous other excellent venison I have had in NZ and the beetroot sauce, yum yum.
We took a gamble by trying the Zinfandel on the wine list trusting that the wine list would match our initial impressions; it is a gamble as we buy a fair bit of Australia’s best Zinfandels (in our and many other opinions). But the Zinfandel that Milk and Honey had on the wine list was very enjoyable, the typical Zinfandel fruit flavour but somewhat lighter than our Aussie favourite which has a hugh alcohol content. It is probably more like some of the variations of Zinfandel we tasted in Croatia and much better than those we have tried from other parts of the world. Well selected wine by Milk and Honey.
BTW, the Globe theatre next door is just so quaint. It seats about 40 people, shows a good selection of films and the staff almost make you feel like you are watching a movie in someone’s private theatrette. I don’t know how they are financial enough to keep running.
