The world home of Art Deco building style...an incredibly interesting and informative walking your and video for a nominal fee ($7.50NZ) for the walking guide and $5 per person for the video, you'll learn more about Art Deco style and the 1931 earthquake that leveled the town than you would in a university history class. I'd also recommend a drive through Hastings, NZ for another perspective. It brought history to life so well you could feel the ghosts of flappers past!

Looks like they are trying to rebuild Napier again by overcharging. Interesting place but I prefer getting better value.

We bought the guide at the I-centre and started on the art-deco trail. For once it was a warm day with no clouds. It soon became apparent that the architecture and designs had a repetitive element which is evidenced by the information leaflet; there were three main architects involved in the reconstruction. The most interesting building was not in the centre but around the headland - the old cigarette factory where you can see the entrance hall and one ante-room.
So do a bit at a time; stop to look in the shops and have a coffee - don't try to do the trail as an expedition, and when you've had enough, quit.
You don't have to but the guide $7=50 NZ but it does explain a fair bit, but there is also information for free in the art deco-centre if you read this first. Also if you go to Hastings, nearby you'll find a number of buildings with similar art-deco designs - and there the railway runs straight down the main street! Health and Safety would have a fit back in the UK.

At the Information centre it is possible to take a guided walk around Napier with a volunteer from the Trust. Our guide was extremely well informed, and the walk actually began with a video presentation of about 20mins-30mins. Then we went out into Napier to examine the art deco style of architecture all the while being given a good-humoured and informative talk by the guide. This took a surprising amount of time and included a visit to the interior of the cinema, which is stunning. This walk will make your trip to Napier just that little bit more interesting.

We did not manage to go on a guided tour but paid $7.50 for the self guided tour.
An enjoyable walk around the town centre with the Art Deco Trust guide.
Very interesting if you do not time your visit with a local guide.
Lots of very interesting, unique buildings and it lives up to its title of Art Deco capital of the world.
The history of the town and nearby Hastings is very interesting.

Its a great place to walk around. The trust and staff are very helpful.
