We liked The Landing a lot and thought (though it might be hard to believe) that its other glowing reviews actually failed to do it justice. We had a great time and we’ll definitely stay here again in the future! Jill and Allan are wonderful hosts. They are interesting and well traveled and know perfectly how to pamper their guests. A bottle of great Hawkes Bay wine awaited us on arrival, along with freshly baked cookies and a plate of gourmet truffles and chocolate dipped apricots. It just doesn't get any better. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and the neighborhood was quite peaceful with great panoramic views of Hawkes Bay below. The made to order breakfast Jill prepared for us was also excellent in every respect.
It’s a bit of a walk down the hill to the town on one side or the port and marina on the other, but either one has a good number of choices for dining. You can walk back up, but if you’d prefer to ride, a cab up the hill is worthwhile and only costs about $12. We’d recommend booking your stay here as early as possible so as to to get the stunning suite overlooking the harbor. We were too late for this, but weren’t at all disappointed in the Lookout room, where we stayed.
There is much to see and do in this region, which is one of the centers of the New Zealand wine regions and Napier is a cute little town with a marine heritage as well as many interesting and beautifully preserved art deco buildings. Our only regret is that we didn’t budget more time for it.
