Hi everyone

First, let me say I am a very seasoned traveler, wine drinker and restaurant / cafe frequenter, involved (for way too many years) in lots of facets of the the hospitality industry, primarily as a wine consultant.

I have NEVER taken the time to write a review of any sort before, as I firmly believed one mans dislike or like may in fact be the opposite for someone else. There is no better experience than actual first hand experience and make up your own mind!

But my recent trip to NZ, Hawkes Bay, Napier has prompted me to type out this very high recommendation.

My hosts went to great lengths to explain not to expect too much - after all we were just dining in a fancy pub.

How pleasantly surprised firstly by the warm welcome and the overall friendliness of both the manager on the night (sorry didn't get his name) and every single staff member. You could just feel the friendly vibe.

A reasonable by the glass drinks list at affordable prices (would like to see more of the local selections!) served again in an efficient friendly manner.

Apparently according to the other guests the G & T's they consumed were also a hit.....

Over to a table to be greeted by the friendly and professional Irish lad. He handled every jibe, remark, delay, change of mind, enquiry with amazing courtesy, made us all aware of the specials and took all our orders - without writing a single one done - remember those days in restaurants ????

But it was the food that blew me away - WOW.

Purposely ordered a range of dishes and every single one of them a HIT !!!

My John Dory possibly the best fish dish I have had in the last ten years!!!

IF I was to make one small suggestion, to what looks like a great winning formula - please loose the red lights fellas, looks a bit bordello like....and the art deco features could be better shown with some subtle less in your face type lighting.

So apart from the lighting everything else was FIRST CLASS...

Thanks for making my first night in Napier so remarkable and euphoric.

All the best

Wayne

Hello and thank you for quite possibly the most fantastic review we have recieved in a long time.
We pride ourselves on our friendly staff and despite the fact that we are "a fancy pub" our food is up there with the best.
We hope to see you again next time you are in Hawke's Bay

Kind Regards Shaye Bird Manager

I really enjoyed the sharing-style menu - such a great idea when you don't want to have to choose just one thing! Loved the modern-spin on the traditional yorkshire pudding - delicious! Plus the Eton Mess to finish was definitely a winner in my book. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and couldn't fault the service on a busy Friday evening. Highly recommended!!

We arrived into Napier after 2 days camping, looking forward to some good food and we found it and more here. I had the fish of the day and my partner had the steak, both of which were absolutely delicious. Portion sizes were generous and the house Sav which was poured from a tap was to die for!! We ended up staying the whole night after moving into the bar :)Would highly recommend for dinner and drinks to anyone. We'll be back :)

We ate here one evening as the menu looked reasonably priced and the eatery is located within one of the Art Deco buildings constructed after the 1931 earthquake.
We received a warm welcome and were able to order our food promptly. There's an interesting history of the hotel on the menu.
We both ordered fish and chips and it came within a paper bag on a plate. The portion sizes were good and the food was hot and tasty.

Hello and thank you for your review.
Our Eatery & Bar is full of history as you would have seen by all the old photos on display of which all are of Napier before the earthquake.
The menu's were designed with the intention that you could take it with you as a memento of your trip to Emporium and our Art Deco hotel.
We hope to see you again soon
