“Open late and nice food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2013

We visited here late at night for a coffee and small meal.

The staff left us a while between seating and ordering but it wasn't a bid deal.

The coffee and the food was really good.

Lovely nostalgic building with great décor.

“Fine for a relaxed meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

We dined here last night, and found it friendly, nice bar ambience, and the food was fine.
Decor is somewhat retro, but not Art Deco like much of the town,
Staff were friendly, helpful and swift.
The food was typical bar type, but good quality.
For its type, recommended.

Thank you for your comments regarding our Eatery & Bar, the design was a nod toward Art Deco and we have retained many of the original features, we were recently awarded the supreme award from the Art Deco Trust, for the refurbishment of Emporium as well as the rooms and foyer of our 42 room Hotel, once again we retained many of the original features. Next time you come to Napier if you love Art Deco you will love our Hotel.

“Convenient and efficient - with interesting memorabilia too”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

Great to find a place in Napier serving local coffee – we walked past quite a number of other places looking for somewhere that did offer a local bean. We were there for breakfast - the wholegrain toast with marmalade was good, fruit platter generous and with plenty of yoghurt, and nice fresh pastries. Coffee well made, lots of local photos and historic memorabilia of interest to peruse, and plenty of newspapers to read over breakfast. Nice toilets and spacious dining area. A few small things let the place down – in particular I never leave feeling the same about a place that charges a surcharge on a public holiday, whereas one that doesn’t stays in my mind as a place I will look forward to returning to. But as a breakfast destination, handy to the sea and the city's retail area, this works well.

Hawthorne Coffee is our supplier and they will be thrilled to read this. We always look to support the local community as best we can, we source locally our Cheese’s, Olive Oils, salami’s and Bacon and of course all our fruit and Vege just to name a few as we believe its very important to support local producers, so when people come to Hawke’s Bay for a holiday they are treated to local produce.

“Good food in a fine art deco period space”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

We were staying at the hotel and decided to try Emporium. It is a big, well designed space, but it can get loud very quickly due to all the hard surfaces. We chose a corner spot for an early dinner and it was fine. The service is friendly and quick. We asked for the wine list and found out that most of the wines are from Marlborough- why? it is located in the heart of Hawke's bay which produces amazing wines. Why not support local? I then saw in small print to ask the waiter for a list of changing "local wines" by the glass- so I did, only to see 1 local wine out of 8- doesn't make sense. Anyways, the food choices were interesting - I had the Haloumi salad, which was very large and fresh. My husband ordered the Tagliatelle, which was done well but could have used a hit of spice- somewhat boring. The people next to us ordered dessert, which looked great, but we full and passed.

Thank you for your recent review of our Hotel and also Emporium, Our wine list does change very regularly and we try to list wines from all regions to appeal to our local clientele, as much as we do our best to support the local wine industry, not all varietals in Hawke’s Bay we succeed in growing to the high standard that we look for, so we look further afield. At present out of 55 wines on our list 29 are from Hawke’s Bay, this will change regularly and we are in current negotiations to have our wine on tap, which has been very well received, to be sourced locally. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
