Great museum with some great permanent exhibits and also some really interesting visiting exhibits. Nothing old and fusty about this museum, loads of hands on, interactive things for all members of the family. Loved their Dr Zeuss and Dinosaur exhibitions last year and how to make a monster this year was great fun for children. If visiting NZ go to the permanent Waikato river exhibition and make sure you see the waka and maori art whilst enjoying stunning views of the river.
Shame the cafe has gone now, even though some good ones close by on Victoria and hood st.

Check it out, small but we learned a lot. The waka was unreal !!! There is a need to have more to see, spent 15mins and saw it all.

(Visited November 2010)

This is one of the under-reviewed attractions in Hamilton, so I'm submitting this overdue review from my visit there at the end of November 2010.

I spent a couple of hours enjoying the very informative and educational Waikato Museum. I learned so much about the history of the Waikato Maori as well as a history of the city of Hamilton. The intricately-carved Maori war canoe, Te Winika, is beautifully exhibited in front of a large window overlooking the Waikato River.

If you're in Hamilton and remotely interested in history and Maori culture, don't miss this museum!
