Congratulations Dorothy and John for creating this little bit of heaven. Visit if you can and see what 2 passionate people can create in an attempt to make our world a better place.

Starting off some 15 years ago, Dorothy and John bought a disused quarry and its associated 17 hectares of land, that nobody else had any use for. They have worked hard at planting and have lovingly turned it into a beautiful garden surrounded by forest . Here you can go for a 2 km round walk and in the process see an array of sculptures set against a backdrop of streams, ponds, steep cliffs, trees and shrubs. We especially loved the pond in the old quarry which was well-stocked with waterlilies and lotus plants. The sculptures are contemporary and weren't all to our taste but that's the joy of looking at art.

We actually felt good about paying an admission fee, feeling that we were in a small way playing a part in Dorothy and John's project and its environmental and aesthetic contribution.

We were able to makes ourselves a cup of tea or coffee at the beginning and end of our walk which was a very hospitable touch too.

This is a fairly small park set in an old quarry. They have done a lot of work establishing trees and water feature but the entry fee of $15 per adult is a bit high. The people running it are very friendly and helpful. We didn't use the cafe but she chatted to us before we went on the walk. As said by another reviewer, it is not suitable for the less mobile. There are a couple of very steep steps up and down and a lot of the walks are on gravel.
We obviously don't get 'art'. One exhibition was 3 white sheets tied around 3 trees with holes cut in for Halloween. Price on Application for that one and I bet it didn't include the trees.!! But some stunning sculptures that would suit some of the huge homes in the Hamilton area. So interesting if you are interested in the arts but I thought the ArtsPost Galleries and Shops in Hamilton was better and it was free.!!

We broke our trip up driving from Auckland to Rotorua on impulse when we saw the road sign and decided it would be great to stretch our legs in an interesting environment.

I love sculpture gardens, Goodwood Sculpture Park being one of my favorite places. The Sculpture Park provides a beautiful setting for the works on display. John and Dorothy are clearly accomplished gardeners and designers. The sculptures themselves change and taste is of course subjective, so I see no value in commenting on the works, other than to say some were excellent, and some not so.

For me, my wife and two kids, the gardens were worth it on a standalone basis. Any organisation that offers a way to see art in such a well maintained setting is worth of the price of admission. The cafe is a bit of an afterthought but that wasn't what we were there for. Another reviewer here suggests taking a picnic, which we will do next time for sure.

Keep in mind that it is a trail, involving stairs and a metal road so if you require special assistance, you may find yourself only exploring the lower levels.
