Owner description: Explore an enchanting world of secret gardens. Transport yourself through time and to far-flung corners of the world. Meander through a lush tropical jungle, visit ancient China and indulge yourself in a Renaissance Prince's 16th century garden. Five garden collections have been created to delight the senses, with some garden concepts reaching back 4,000 years. Hamilton Gardens is a conceptual garden based in the Waikato that explores the context, history and meaning of gardens through time, and from around the world. It is internationally recognised for its unique concept and is the Waikato region's most popular tourist destination. Only five minutes drive from Hamilton's CBD, the Gardens is open 7 days a week during daylight hours and entry and parking is free. Access is off SH1, alongside Cobham Drive on the southern side of Hamilton.

What a jewel, these gardens are a delight and worth a visit no matter how short.

Wedged between SH2 and the Waikato River there are two main gates so access is good particularly as the Gardens are used for major art and cultural events with many car parks. Entry is free with opening hours for the central Enclosed Gardens are open from 0700 to 1800 hours, daily whilst the Victorian Greenhouses open from 1000 to 1700 hours, dependent upon the season. There is also a very friendly Information Centre and well stocked Garden Café and Restaurant so the opportunity for a full day visit is a good possibility.

Organised into zoned garden collections there are five main areas, two greenhouses and eight other attractions illustrated by colour code on the site plan available from the visitor centre. The Enclosed Gardens - Paradise Garden, the Productive Garden and Fantasy Gardens all flow into one another, cunningly hidden and disguised by walls, planting and walkways. The Cultivar and Landscape Gardens occupy a much greater area owing to their contents; nevertheless all are accessible with good paths and boardwalks. All that is missing is a ‘sensory garden’ however the sounds and smells will delight those with impaired vision.

The Kitchen Garden and the Sustainability Backyard (Productive Garden) are well worth a special visit and the Herb Garden does offer a slight sensory journey. Look out for the two beehives and the chickens. Access is easy but sensible footwear is probably a good idea as is a bottle of water on hot days. For those wishing to walk or cycle there is an established route through the Gardens back to the City centre.

Thank you Hamilton for such a great place to visit.

Great place to relax and unwind - although can be rather breezy. Good cafe, plenty of choice and pleasant to sit on the deck gazing across the lake or watching the wanderers wander.

“Wow, Wow an d Wow”

Have been to the gardens for a few weddings, craft fairs etc but taking the grandchildren along to the Teddy Bears picnic was awesome. It did out price a few families but that is the fault of commercialism these days. The gardens are very well done and there are many relaxing spots to just sit and ponder the day.

“What a place and FREE!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

So impressed! Went to the info centre expecting to have to buy an entry ticket and it was free. The Themed Gardens were a real treat and took so much longer to stroll than it appeared on paper. These normally close at 6pm but if there is an event in one of them in the evening as when we visited then they are closed at 5pm. The rest of Hamilton Gardens is open 24/7! The cafe with terrace overlooking the lake is superb. Nothing too much trouble for the staff even though when we ate it was early evening and they were preparing for an even later that evening. The food was wonderful, coffee really good. Wish we could visit again and 'do' more of the gardens but we leave for the UK in a day or two and have more places to see before we go.
