staying at portside hotel is almost like staying at a serviced apartement. the rooms are small with kitchenette. there is no restaurant etc... but there are restaurants in walking distance. i wouldn't stay here if i wanted a relaxing getaway but for one or two nights it is functional and the staff are friendly.

and there is a dvd player in each room.

Fantastic hotel, seemed brand new, amazing room facilities.

A complete all-rounder.

All aspects were fantastic and really enjoyed our short stay at this hotel.
Price can always be cheaper! but it was very good value (only slightly more than the much lower quality motels around.

We are so pleased we chose this hotel to stay in Gisborne. It"s location couldn"t have been better, to restaurants, bars, the harbour.& beaches. We stayed on the 3rd floor in a studio ,with views of the harbour. We had a fully equiped kitcken, with microwave, fridge, oven, hobbs and even a dishwasher..The decor of the room was excellent, the bed really comfortable and the bathroom very modern. The staff were excellent, right from our booking until our departure, they were so helpful. The Portside Hotel is a very well organized place to stay and would highly recommend it, to everyone.

I stay monthly at the Portside Gisborne.

The rooms are basically apartment type. You can have a studio (bed in open plan room with kitchen - seperate bathroom) or 1 or 2 bedroom apartments. Or they have penthouses as well which are rather large and all the mod cons.

The one and two bedroom apartments are all furnished the same in that they have a :

- single dishdrawer dishwasher
- washing machine
- dryer
- waste disposal unit
- Sky TV
- DVD player
- stereo
- cooking equipment (pots etc)
- microwave
- full oven
- full ceramic hobs.

etc.......

The 1 bedroom apartments have a very large bath with shower over it.

The 2 x bedroom apartment has a shower only.

The property is right next to the river and port.

All the rooms have air con.

Would be best to book on the 2nd or 3rd floor not the ground floor as then you can leave the ranch slider ajar at night.

All rooms have outdoor chairs and table on their balcony.

Very close to town - 3 minute walk. Also the same to cafes and restaurants.

Very helpful staff.

The damage from the earthquake in Dec 07 has been repaired. It is safe in an earthquake!

...we looked at a lot of places before booking in Gisborne and this looks like it's one of the better places in the area.

Good location, just on the side of the harbour. The area is a bit of a building site as it's all being redeveloped, but it's nothing you can actually see once you're in the hotel as long as you book a harbour side room. Being here also means you're a few moments walk from the new restraurants and bars whilst still being a few mins from the town centre and, still, right next to the water.

Rooms are pretty fresh, very well equipped and, although the fittings aren't what you'd call luxurious, everything is tasteful and looks good. Only minor gripe with the rooms would be the lack of outdoor furniture which seemed to be a problem with most rooms...

There had been a major earthquake just a few days before we arrived and, although there was some minor cosmetic damage to the hotel, the fact that burst water mains had been repaired, rooms restored etc just before Christmas says a lot for the great running of the hotel. You get the feeling the management know exactly how to run this place.

only one other minor gripe, but nothing major... some rooms on the habour side don't have much of a view and there's a boat loading bay across the way which, while not enormously noisy, could be a bit annoying if you're a light sleeper.

  • Liked — The way the place was run
  • Disliked — Probably the lack of outdoor furniture on the terraces and balconies

This modern apartment hotel is located on Reads Quay overlooking the banks of the Turangui River (and the Port). It offers 64 Guest Rooms, and 1,2 (and possibly 3) Bedroom Suites and is within a short walking distance of all the main city centre facilities of this most attractive small city.

As a couple we had a most enjoyable and all too short 2 night stay in Gisborne during March 2007 on a recent tour of NZ. We had been recommended to try the Portside by a former Gisborne resident but unfortunately on our arrival we found the Portside was full that night. The very friendly and helpful reception staff however advised that they did have a room the following (Friday) night on a weekend special rate including a complimentary continental breakfast pack (from NZ$125). We did indeed book this but chose to pay a little more for a river view 1 bedroom suite (NZ$175).

We were not disappointed.

The hotel is modern, the rooms spacious and very well equiped. Our one bedroom suite provided full kitchen facilities with more than adequate crockery, pans and other utensils, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, TV. DVD, Audio, Internet Access, and a large spa bath with shower over. There is a King Bed in the bedroom and I believe a bed/ settee in the lounge area, although we didn't use it. There is ample storage in all areas.

I believe the hotel had been open about a year but all the furnishings seemed good quality (especially the immaculate cotton bedsheets) and worked well. Cleaning seemed very thorough as well - will all drawers opened and cleaned out on each change of occupant in the room as well as all kitchen utensils washed.

All staff very pleasant and extremely helpful.

At the time of our visit, a new apartment (I think !) block was being built next door to the Portside - this may create some noise, particularly for the rooms without a river view, but I think the building would be completed very soon. We did not suffer any noise or other interference from the Port - which is on the other side of the river, but on rare occasions you might hear the odd blast from a ships horn or particularly noisy vehicles entering the port. There is a extremely infrequently used railway line in front of the hotel - but you would be extremely unfortunate if a train used it during your stay as the rails were rusty suggesting it hadn't been used for many months when we were there.

As an apartment hotel, there are no dining facilities in the hotel but they have arrangements with some local restaurants who will deliver to your room. This arrangement also applied to the continental breakfast provided - which provided you made your choice by 9pm the previous evening delivered an impressive hamper to your room that evening to allow you to prepare your own breakfast at your leisure. As the hotel is so close to the City centre, it is only a few minutes pleasant stroll to any of the local restaurants - we particularly enjoyed the "Works" which is across the river in an old freezing works which now houses the Longbush winery and this indoor and "al fresco" restaurant. Food very good - evening service at times a bit under pressure and slow.

All in all a most enjoyable and pleasant stay and we would thoroughly recommend the Portside. Others obviously think so too as it appears to be frequently fully booked.
