“Kiwiana at it's best”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

We loved the friendliness of the hosts....

We were looking for Kiwianna and found it. motel unit clean tidy and well presented. Dining again was well worth the money.... additionally we looked at a great sunset

Hicks Bay sunrises.... stunning.

Room Tip: get a room on the top level to enjoy the broader view of the bay

I like the service at this Motel Lodge. The Owner were very nice to us, and rellay helped us to plan the next day. The food were awsome and with good amount. We only arrived at 6pm and left at 4am the next morning, so not much to share with others. However, if someone is coming from Whakatane towards the East Cape and would like to see the sunrise, this is a good place to stay.

Unfortunately we arrivied on a cold and rainy day to find a damp cold room with an antiquated oven to attempt to heat our two bedroomed motel rooms. Otherwise its very basic and in desperate need of an update. It must be its location and lack of competition that keeps it going.
Its a lot of money for what it is and we won't be returning in a hurry.

Thank you for taking your time to review the motel. The motel is fifty years old and we have been upgrading as much as possible each year. Unfortunately we do have competition on the East Cape and these places can be found at the Gisborne or Opotiki i-sites web sites. All the best to you.

We had a lovely experience up there in Hicks Bay. We were wary after the dreadful reviews but were pleasantly surprised. It was just like stepping back in time. Sure, it isn't luxury - but consider where it is located. Thank heavens its not an ultra modern resort. We were in Unit 3 and cooked our own meal for both dinner and breakfast.
We enjoyed excellent views, a comfortable bed, and some lovely warmer moments on the deck in the sun having a cup of tea. We went on a bushwalk early in the morning, the track was rundown but this all added to the adventure. I hope this place maintains its rustic nature.

Room Tip: Suggest you go for a 1 bedroom unit with self catering

Thank you. In winter the track gets a beating with slips and trees coming down. It gets a good clean up in early December every year when the ground dries out. All the best to you, you made our day.

The room was basic and the bathroom floor was sticky with cleaning product - your shoes stuck to the floor. The meal was overpriced and very basic. The only vegetarian option on the dinner menu was salad AND roast vegetables which turned out in practice to be salad OR vegetables for $21 ?! When I asked the owner for the salad, I was told that all meals came with one or the other, not both. We left early in the morning to eat breakfast elsewhere. Take the time to find somewhere else to stay and to eat.

Thanks for taking your time to write a review. In the off season the restaurant does offer very limited food. Sorry you were unhappy. The wild wind and subtropical rain would not have helped either. All the best to you.

The view is great and so is the location. But, plugs are lacking, making cooking a bit of a challenge. Little bathroom space, unless door is closed giving access to a small inset of shelves in the wall behind. For two it is much easier to make the necessary adjustments, but is seems far to crowded for more than that. Rather pricey when compared to other accommodations we have had. But, there is not much competition at this altitude.

I stayed here almost 50 years ago, the motels are new. There's a few more units now. I won't be staying here again. The amenities were basic enough and I'm used to that, but I was ripped off in the restaurant.

Very inconvenient having to go to the lounge to do my work (internet based) but that's the only way you can get on the internet. Why not make the Wifi service the whole property?

My main meal was beautiful but then I was offered a "pudding". Sounded good - but I didn't inquire about the price. I chose a passionfruit sundae, which was basically 2-3 scoops of ice cream with fluffy "cream" on top and a trickle of passionfruit sauce. $9. NINE DOLLARS!!! You've got to be joking. When I mentioned it to the boss, he told me that he hasn't put his dessert prices up for "years". My fault, I should have asked the price when I ordered - but be wary.

There are other properties in the area, so whereas Hicks Bay Motor Lodge used to be the only motel in the area, this is no longer the case.

I know that it can be hard to make a living from tourism these days, especially in the winter, especially when you have a large number of rooms available - but keeping the customers satisfied is even more important.

Thank you for your review of three stars and noting you enjoyed your main meal. Nine dollars is the price of all of our puddings. The internet is only available in the Lodge area at present. We appreciate your honesty.
