I recently had the great pleasure of staying in the Emerald Hotel Gisborne.

As a local I was looking for somewhere nice to celebrate a romantic weekend with my wife. We had contimplated venturing out of town as we didnt believe Gisborne could offer us a truly memorable experience - but of course my darling wife had other ideas and asked if we could try the Emerald as her friends had recommended it to her.

We spent the enitre stay feeling like true royalty.

The Receptionist was local and friendly when we arribed, only too happy to answer all our questions. Her knowledge and friendly personality was a great first impression.

Once in our room we were so pleased! Why hadnt anyone told us this could be found in Gisborne. A huge room with a lovely Kingsize bed in the bedroom, a lovely balcony with an amazing view of the pool area. It was hard to believe that we hadnt left the district.

We dined at The Grill Room that night and the girl there was so great. She had a really good knowledge of the menu and wine list and her service was the best i have ever experienced in Gisborne - and i have owned serveral business' locally - one being in the hospitality trade. She really made us feel so welcome - nothing was too much to ask of her. I later found that she is the new Reatuarant Manager and Events Co-ordiantor. If her staff are anything like her - wow!

Breakfast in the restaurant the next morning.... Yummy fully cooked buffet and again a lovely girl catering to our every need.

All in all a truly wonderful experience. Romantic weekend achieved. Wife smiling blissfully. And didnt have to travel out of town to achieve it.

Good on you Emerald.

We had booked in for one night but on seeing our suite decided to stay an extra night. It was nice to get some space after a few small rooms. This seemed like a good sized apartment..Central location, decent restaurant. Only criticism was the hallways were quite dark, though very wide.

I spent approximately 20 minutes to find the place. When I mentioned this to the staff member at reception, she said she was sorry but the fact that they had moved in the new premises 3 months prior and had not put up the signage (very poor excuse). I would have thought that the first thing would have been to put up good signage.

There was no complimentary paper in the morning. The hotel charged for the paper.

We decided to have cooked breakfast at the hotel, the service was really poor. All the cooked food was empty and people had to stand around waiting for eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns etc.

Out of ten places in New Zealand, this was the only place where the management felt American, that is, we're going to gouge you for as much as we can. Having paid months in advance, we were given the worst room in the place -- the window opened onto the roof. We switched rooms, at no charge according to the desk clerk, but found on checkout another $50 added to our rate, which was already higher than those checking in at the time. Many rooms are literally blocks from the lobby. Valet staff, etc. very nice, but the manager was Basil Fawlty friendly.

This is a very good hotel. Although it's a bit hard to find your way around the rooms are excellent. My only gripe would be that the bedroom did not have a TV in it and the shower head kept falling off. I would stay here again.
