750 steps up - just as well we were not in a hurry! Took our time and were rewarded at the top with amazing views.

be prepared for ,firstly, a long drive to get there-one of those routes where the distance in kilometres would have you believe you'll be there a lot more quickly than you turn out to be. from Te Araroa it's another 20k of occasionally quite rough single track unsealed road, but probably over half is sealed-just the rough bits can be fairly rough. A brisk climb gets you to the top-I'm sure it would've been even more impressive on a clear day. if travelling from the south, make time for a stop at the fantastic carved church at Tikitiki, about 25k south of Te Araroa. another tip-if you even think you're going to need it, get fuel when you see a pump-very few pumps along the way, and if you're like us in realising in Tolaga Bay that you need fuel, it makes for a very long and nervous drive back to Gisborne, and the next fuel stop in Kaiti....

The road was scary and mostly dirt track, and it was reaining so hard when we got there that we couldn't climb the hill to see the lighthouse. However, we enjoyed the remoteness and the view of the lighthouse as you edged around the cliff to see it was pretty good! I also saw a mini tornado.

We unfortunately could not make the walk to the top due to leg problems. But it was a lovely drive. WE stopped on the way and had a picnic. Take insect spray :)

We thoroughly enjoyed the drive and walk there, although I have to admit I would not want to do that before sunrise, it is quite a drive with a lot of gravel road, which is not a problem during the day with its stunning views. The way up is steep yes, but not very hard, the view up there with its serenity is absolutely worth it ...
