One of the best provincial museums I have visited. They have just completed a large new addition and the café is great.

Very interesting look and well set out displays. Busy place and they had a new display so to encourage people to attend it was free.
There is very little to do in Gisborne, but it is a lovely little town for a stroll, and not too far to the museum. There was a nice collection of north island and Gisborne history, and a fairly well done exhibit section on Maori history and culture, though if you are traveling by cruise ship you may find this somewhat repetitive with other stops as far as Maori exhibits go. The museum admission is free.
A slightly eclectic collection, but reflective of local history. Building a bit tired, but still worth a look to get a perspective on the environs
We found the displays excellent and particularly the maritime section. All the old photographs of Gisborne's past were very interesting. The restored bridge of the ship was great.
