Description: Opened in 2006 by owner Tony Stewart, award-winning Clooney offers a unique dining experience in the heart of Auckland’s central city. Located in a once-derelict warehouse, redesigned to create an atmosphere of contemporary opulence, Clooney’s design aesthetic is matched only by its fearlessly inventive cuisine. Chef Jacob Kear has rewritten the narrative for New Zealand food with a progressive menu that gives familiar local ingredients a distinctive, international twist. The accent is on impeccably sourced ingredients, clean and precise flavours, and dishes that evolve to reflect the changing seasons. Chef Jacob Kear draws on an international career in some of the world’s most respected kitchens to give direction to a thought provoking dining experience. Clooney’s menu reflects his passion for foraging, his commitment to locally sourced ingredients and his mastery of both classic and contemporary techniques. Kear’s ambitious tasting menu of over thirteen courses will take guests on a culinary tour of New Zealand. From the lush rainforests of the North to the expansive coastal wilderness of Fiordland, the striking geography of New Zealand’s regions is brought to life on the plate. Clooney’s wine list is curated by sommelier's Jarod Santana and Grant Dingwall with wines chosen to perfectly complement our distinctive menu. The list spans over 300 labels, striking a perfect balance between the Old and New Worlds while showcasing the very best of New Zealand. Our cocktail and sake programs, under the direction of Jarod and bar manager Yusuke Sakabe, are designed to be enjoyed with food or simply to be enjoyed.

“Truly excellent food in a unique atmosphere”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

We ate here in January 2013. The location is a bit odd as it is in what seems like a business district and slightly out of the way. This made us feel unsure if we had done the right thing in deciding to come here, but we shouldn't have worried.

The restaurant has a truly unique atmosphere as they have divided up the large space into individual dining areas by using fine metal mesh curtains. We had just a table for two and it felt like we were in our own little universe. We could see through the mesh to other diners but you couldn't hear them, other than a low murmer of talking. It felt like we were in a our own world but you could see distant worlds. The only person who came into our world was the waiter. It worked really well and allowed you to concentrate upon the food, which was worth concentrating upon.

We opted for the 9 course tasting menu with matched wines. It was outstanding. The only slight problem was that we were both somewhat stuffed at the end, even though the portion sizes were small. Perhaps the 6 course would have been better. The wines were from around the world and were really well matched to the food.

The service was excellent. The only criticism is that most of the dishes are very complex and it takes the waiter a long time to recite what it is, which gets a little tedious. We asked to have a copy of the menu left with us so we could remember what we were eating. This is a small criticism, however.

If you enjoy fine dining and you are in Auckland it would be a real shame not to dine here.

“Stylish”
Reviewed April 6, 2013 via mobile

If you want to impress and you have a very healthy wallet then very stylish , grown up.intimate.Food was all very good, inventive and nicely plated. Service was excellent accept when the cork broke on a very expensive bottle, the waiter ran off to decant the wine... Not really worldly service.except for that ,the ambiance was of a high end very smooth operation.Auckland goes NY/hong kong ..
Go for something special or to impress .

“Great restaurant”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

Great ambience, very San Francisco. Booth tables were really surprisingly easy to sit at and chat, even though only 3 of us. The service was a bit too attentive at times. Food was excellent - totally recommend the beef, delicious, as were the petit fours - don't miss them!

“Loved the ambiance”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We had a tasting menu with wine. We loved the ambiance of the place. The service was good, but maybe a bit too professional if you get my drift. We also loved that the place wasn`t too loud, you could actually hear yourself think which we find pretty hard at some other restaurant where everyone are shouting around the tables. The food was well presented and tasty, it was gourmet without being too pretentious. The different wines were also excellent. Overall highly recommended.

“Very good”
Reviewed March 31, 2013 via mobile

I love the decor at Clooney, there is no other restaurant like it in Auckland. On this occasion we were at one of the smaller tables which isn't quite as much fun as a booth but still comfortable and lots of space. We had the 6 course tasting menu, my husband had the wine matches. Service was good - mainly unobtrusive, the water was kept topped up and I never wanted for anything which is all you can ask for. I did want a bit more description about the food but the level of communication seemed to vary depending on who was serving (we had a few different waiters). Wine match was great, food was very very good. I'm limiting to four stars because we decided we liked the degustation at French Cafe, Sidart and even Bowmans better. Hard to put your finger on it but I was looking for a bit more flavor - food looked amazing but didn't quite measure up to how it looked. We felt like we wanted some salt...
I don't want this to come off as a negative review because it's not, it was a great night and I would recommend it, we have just had some amazing degustations lately so there is a lot to live up to.
