Owner description: Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

One advice: go as early as you can otherwise you will face a horrendous traffic line that will delay you from getting there and enjoying the village delights. Lots of nice tasting foods, wines, drinks that are locally produced and things you don:t normally find in supermarkets. It is a little pricey, though so come prepared with cash as most places will only take cash and there is only one ATM there which many people line up for.

Good place to eat, en route, but quite a way out of Auckland to make it a "must do" for visitors unless they're going to go and snorkel at oat Island, in which case, they can't avoid Matakana and should stop to eat there and have a wee wander of the village.

but nothing too special...the farmer's market on a Saturday is quite good BUT: if you go there don't miss out on the area....beautiful landscape and views, vineyards, beaches - a beautiful countryside...so have a quick look around the village and enjoy the rest of the day in the countryside

Really like Matakana Village - close to vineyards and plenty of accommodation up there. Farmers Market on Saturday mornings although the car queue in can be bad. Movie theatre lovely, the bar upstairs is a nice place to stop for a drink, some shops that are great - love the shoe shop personally. Always enjoy visiting.
