“Great food and great value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

For the meagre $50.25 we spent we had a very generous and authentic meal - 2 courses, shared satay entre, rice and roti. The manager was very helpful about combinations and what we should order and the food certainly didn't disappoint! The meat was so tender, and I was told it was marinated in kiwifruit to tenderize - so much nicer than the old trick of baking soda. Didn't realize the restaurant was BYO - helpfully pointed over the road - 4 minutes later back in seat, with a paltry $1 corkage - love it!
Will be back. The crowded restaurant at 6.30pm on a Saturday ( you really should book) speaks volumes for the quality and value.
Hope the management don't change a winning formula on the strength of good reviews.

“Don't order54 dessert.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2013

I'll start with the good bits, roti and chicken curry were of a good standard, hokkien noodles while not of the authentic variety was a yummy version. Sweet n sour fish was nice and balanced.

Sambal okra ordered ,turned out out served as sambal aubergine....The aubergine skin was tough, flesh was soggy just below the skin and certain was undercooked. A bit strange considering it had been sliced...microwaved perhaps?

And now the finale.. sago coconut pudding had apparently sold out. The 'banana fritters with ice cream' and 'rambutan with ice cream', served with vanilla ice cream in every other restaurant I have come across, came out with goody gum drops ice cream...Seriously? Does the ice cream decider have any taste buds? Canned rambutan served with bubblegum flavoured ice cream with gummy lollies with chocolate sauce... mmm... YUCK!

Bad taste aside, the manager was huffy and treated us very poorly when we sent it back requesting plain vanilla ice cream. She bristled all the way to the diary next door, brought back a tub of cheap french vanilla ice cream and asked sarcastically if french vanilla was an ok substitute for vanilla. We said yes, quite appalled by her lack of professionalism. It's not like you served TipTop and I requested Kohu Rd.

The cherry on top was getting overcharged $27 with mystery dishes on the bill. They were probably trying to make up for the 4 desserts returned. Is this acceptable behavior at cheap and cheerful places? I think not. Definitely will not be back. I will continue enjoying Malaysian food at Sri Mahkota, Selera and KK Restaurant.

“A fantastic restaurant - truly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

I live elsewhere but will almost always go to Sri Pinang when I'm in Auckland. The Nasi Goreng is sublime, and a fantastic combo with a roti curry. All at a great price and good service. This is easiest the best Malaysian restaurant in NZ, and I would suggest it would highly rate internationally. There are some Malaysian restaurants in Wellington that people talk about, but they are not a patch on Sri Pinang. This is truly a fantastic restaurant.

“Best Malaysian in the CBD”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

Sri Penang is the best restaurant on K Road. Featuring Malaysian cuisine, the value is excellent and the portions are large with high quality ingredients. While the menu isn't extensive it offers up all of the Malaysian favourites including Laksa, Curry and Roti and Mee Gorang and they are all done very, very well. Excellent place for lunch. BYOB.

“Best Malaysian restaurant in Auckland”

This small and unpretentious place is home away from home for us. It is often busy so book. If in doubt let Angie choose for you. Take your own wine. Good for a couple or a group of friends sharing. very well priced.. It is located in the interesting area of Karangahape Road which is a snapshot of Auckland nightlife later in the evening.
