Descend the steep stairs to this haven of Japanese yumminess just off Queen St. Order the tempura vegetables, pork belly and lots of Asahi or sake. Ask for the low tables and watch the chefs making all those delicious dishes. Service is top-notch and not imposing (as usually is at Japanese restaurants) and Kura is one of those places where it is not pretentious but has the ability to feel both lively and cosy at the same time. Highly recommended.

And always noisy and always fun and always too much Asahi consumed. Great place, great staff, great food, and not too wallet-emptying.

This is one of the family of three japanese restaurants located almost next to each other in Upper Queen St, just up the road from Aotea Centre and Town Hall. This area is quite lively at night, particularly since the Comedy Festival is on at the moment.

We went into Tanuki's Cave and Tanuki Sushi and Sake Bar, but these were packed on a Thursday night and luckily we got a couple of seats at the bar in Kura. Kura is down some steep stairs, after opening the slide door from the street, and in a basement with red brick walls. It is cosy but not cramped and has a bar for singles or couples which faces the bar and the sushi prep area. It is quite interesting watching the sushi being made. The rest of the restaurant fans around the central prep/kitchen area. Dark wooden tables and bench chairs, so it is a mix of traditional and contemporary decor. It was busy, but not so noisy that we couldn't hear each other. The staff were attentive and efficient and the food came out at just the right time. The sake list provides a wide range of tastes and pricing, without being overwhelming.

We are vegetarians, and there is just enough dishes to satisfy two of us. The Tofu and Seaweed salad and Agedashi Tofu were particularly good. Very reasonably priced, although we don't eat fish or meat. We would definitely return and try out the other two as well.

We didn't book but got a lovely place at the the bar on Friday night. Everything is very reasonably priced including wine, and the sushi was first rate (apart from the raw octopus which i was rather over adventurous in ordering as an appetiser!)
Try the Seared salmon roll - best i have tasted and fun watching the chefs prepare with a blow torch.

My daughter and I first tried out the Kura Restaurant when we visited Auckland in July, 2011. I had read an article in the the newspaper which discussed Auckland's best hidden restaurants....We thoroughly enjoyed our beautiful meal and ordered many of the recommended items. We had another trip planned to Auckland in November, 2011 and I made sure to pre-book a meal at the Kura weeks before our flight to Auckland. If you can book a meal in The Kura, I'm confident you will not be disappointed. It is an experience not to be missed!!!
