“Ticks the Boxes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2013

Our second time at Toto. First was with a group, this time a degustation meal for two. The food is excellent - imaginative, tasty and wonderfully presented. Six courses, each with a great wine match, took 2.5 hours and we needed that time to fit it all in. Our last minute booking had us out on the deck which would have been fine, but we got upgraded on our arrival to a prime inside table. The friendly, relaxed but professional service was excellent and Saturday night opera a treat. We're convinced enough that Toto will become as regular as we can, remembering this is an upper priced restaurant. And a small query we had after our visit was promptly and well dealt with. Well done Toto, see you soon!

“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2013 via mobile

We visited Toto twice in 4 days - firstly for a wedding reception and, following the fantastic food and welcome we experienced then, a second time for a quiet meal for two. On both occasions the staff were brilliant - friendly, knowledgable and accommodating - and the food was even better! Both meals were fantatstic and can't highly recommend the baby calamari enough! Seriously can't recommend Toto enough and looking forward you to our next visit already - grazie!

“Degustation Delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

Having intended to visit Toto's for some years due to the positive feedback we purchased a Grab one deal and booked for Sat night being the opera night paying an extra $10 a head for this. On arriving we were shown our table right by reception which we said we weren't happy with so then shown another table which was lovely. The atmosphere was good and staff pleasant and seemed to be mainly Italian so a little difficult to understand with the accent sometimes (some possibly less experienced). We chose the matching wines to go with each course and matched well. There was also an option to have beers selected for each course or non-alcoholic beverages. The food was good, well presented and tasty. On reflection we would have chosen to have only purchased one wine match and shared each wine between us as they were generous servings and after 7 wines had more than we really required. We thoroughly enjoyed the opera numbers (had 3 sets of 2 songs each) sung by two ladies and by the end of the night felt we had a great night out.

“Pleasant”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013 via mobile

We dined at Toto on the back of a half price internet deal and while most restaurants undertstand the spirit of these kinds of deals there are some that give the impression they do not (to convert new diners into regular visits at full price). Unfortunately, Toto fell into the latter camp because we were not seated in the main (beautiful) part of the restaurant, rather out the back on a concrete deck overlooking city central buildings and there was a constant thumping distracting us (like a niteclub or band was near by). The service was pleasant but came across as inexperienced and rushed. The degustation menu was mostly nice, the Salmone Bella Vista & Rotolo were standouts, but the final course before dessert was not. The Vitello (crumbed veal) was very disappointing and to be fair, should have been sent back, it was not cooked making it chewy and difficult to manage. This was made worse because I don't usually eat veal on principle (yes, I'm one of those people) and it could be argued that was my fault as I should have stuck to my guns and requested the change which was offered at the start of the evening. But I view degustations as pushing the envelope, try things you wouldn't normally eat. The best part of the evening was related drink, the degustation menu has, at additional charge, either wine, beer or non-alcoholic options which you select before you start. We selected the wine matching and all courses were well paired with wines sourced locally but mainly from Italy (of course), my standout was the Aglianico Rose (paired with the Rotolo) and the pours were quite generous. Overall, yes, I stick with pleasant, but a little below my expectations which were quite high.

“Disappointing Overall”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

On entering Toto we were immediately impressed with the decor and atmosphere. The cozy intimate tables, low lighting and sound of happy diners hit just the right note. Then we were led out to the "deck" - quite obviously until recently the small outdoor area where staff took their cigarette breaks. With an outlook through plastic over industrial rooftops and the unkempt back of inner-city office buildings, and accompanied by the loud hum of refrigerator units and air conditioners, we were seated at our dodgy outdoor cafe-style seats.

When we asked to be moved, we were told that the restaurant was 'full' - so perhaps GrabOne customers (or peasants?) were not entitled to a seat in the nice restaurant, but shoved out the back and out of sight. It was move inside or leave immediately, so we again requested another table and this time they relented and allowed us in.

A perfectly lovely table. Now for the food.

The GrabOne deal was for the tasting menu (usually $120 plus $65 for the wine matching), and we both had very high expectations as we'd read some wonderful reviews.

First Course: Cured Salmon, Prawn, Russian Salad
The caviar was delicious and a nice touch on the beautifully presented plate, but the prawn tasted like it had been overcooked, frozen and then recently defrosted. Salmon was okay, salad reasonable. We both agreed we'd had better from a Baltic Ferry smorgasbord, which is not a compliment. Wine (a Greco Di Tufo from Campania) was delicious.

Second Course: Herb Smoked Wagu Carpaccio, Rocket, Cipriani
Nice enough, wish there had been more than one sad little flake of Parmesan. Another great wine choice (Felton Road Chardonnay).

Third Course: Spinach Rolled Pasta, Ricotta, Mozzarella, Pine Nuts
A classic dish and crowd pleaser that is hard to get wrong. Lovely flavours, but sadly mine was warm in some places, hot in others, which made me wonder if it had been reheated in a microwave. Nice rosé to accompany and lead us into the red wine selection.

Fourth Course: Mushroom Risotto with Pancetta, Quail and Truffle Oil
The highlight of the evening. An earthy dish, delicately flavoured and enhanced (not overpowered) by truffle oil. If all dishes were this good, we would have been blown away. Accompanying wine (Nebbiolo Ricossa Barbaresco) was our favourite of the evening.

Fifth Course: Crumbed Veal, Smoked Mozzarella, Zucchini, Mint
Forgettable, except for the zucchini, which somehow managed to be packed with flavour when the veal and mozzarella were not.

Dessert: Vanilla Panna Cotta, Strawberry & Rhubarb Sorbet
For this dish we travelled back in time to the early 90s. Frosted glass plate, dustings of icing sugar and a small chocolate-dipped cone place upside down (how playful!) on the sorbet. The Panna Cotta was disappointing, with hints of Palmolive dishwash, and was left uneaten. Sorbet was delightful, but lost in all the needless trimmings. We longed for a strong cheese to help us enjoy the dessert wine (Zibibbo Passito Di Pantelleria).

Verdict: Lovely atmosphere (inside), pleasant staff, some dishes disappointing (don't bother with the tasting menu). The wine pairing was amazing and made our night.
