It sounds like a very English restaurant but this is not English cooking. The lamb looked great and the venison was delicious. The deserts successfully tempted me. The place is popular with both locals from out of town and with tourists. Rather dark pub-like atmosphere, nice booths. The help are friendly but slightly laissez faire in the kiwi fashion. This is not fast food and neither is the service but you will enjoy it, even dining alone.

Recommended by the concierge in our hotel. First impressions were that it needed a good clean. A musty smell greeted us! Plenty on the menu but sloppily presented and very poor service. Very old fashioned! Expensive for such poor quality food. The fish was like a piece of leather!
Plenty of other very good restaurants in down town Auckland to chose from.

I've been here a couple of times now. The steak is always cooked exactly how you want and the meals are served promptly. Try to Caper steak or the Giant T-bone.

We have just been on a family trip, 3 grown up children and our parents, wanted to go to the Sky Tower restaurant but it was fully booked, on recommendation from the hotel staff we went to Tony's Lord Nelson Restaurant which was right next door to the hotel. At first glance, the restaurant looks small and quite dark - but surprisingly it is huge! The food was amazing. On offer were simple, fresh, well cooked meals made with quality produce. The service was great with friendly, efficient staff. Mains were reasonably priced between $30-$35, and entrees $10-$15. Didn't have dessert as too full following the mains! The meal was so good on the Sunday night that we went back on the Tuesday night to have a last dinner before leaving Auckland to return to Dunedin! If there was anything that I could suggest improving on, it would be balancing the temperature, it was too hot on the Sunday night and too cold on the Tuesday, but nothing major. Highly recommend this restaurant.
