“Mediochre, but in lively location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2013

We ate here on our first night in Auckland after a 12 hour flight. I had the squid and a steak which were both ok, but no better than that. The service was also a little average as we were left waiting for a long time, and then got an australian woman who seemed to have a personality bypass.

It did a job when we were hungry and tired but we wouldn't go back, as too many other places to try that are almost certainly better

“GOOD FARE IN A GOOD LOCATION”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

We ate here twice on our NZ trip.

The first occasion was on a busy Friday night when the area was heaving and we were very tired after two long flights in quick succession. We needed a pick up and we got it. Salt and Pepper Squid starters, always a good test of a kitchen, were spot on. My large helping of New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels was more than adequate and Matron's Snapper was well cooked and tasty. Service was brisk and efficient as befits a busy night when the restaurant was quickly filling.

The second visit was for a last lunch with our NZ relatives before going our separate ways. It had not been our specific intention to return but a wish for some fish and a lack of ostentation drew us back. This time the experience was even more enjoyable and service even better as there were fewer diners. Green Lipped Mussels as a starter came in an excellent Lemongrass and Coconut Broth that the table took somewhat like Holy Communion! Bacon and Scallop Skewers were another good starter and the Scallop and Prawn Salad main earned high marks. Bund usually abjures battered fish on grounds that the batter takes later revenge but felt moved to join his NZ "rellies" in Fush and Chups. He need not have worried, the batter was really light and the tarakihi moist and just cooked through without having taken on any oil. Altogether a most enjoyable meal.

In an area where some places charge really silly prices value for money is good.

“Avoid this place at all costs!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2013

Visiting Auckland, we thought we would amble down to the waterfront and have a nice seafood meal! We chose the V Grill, - Big mistake.

After seating us, the waiter gave us menus and said he would be back.
A waitress came by and we asked for water. This finally came but was tainted; it tasted metallic and was undrinkable. After complaining, we were told it was lemon water! It didn’t taste of lemon I can tell you. The waitress finally took our glasses away and came back with ‘fresh’ water.

After waiting a very long time, we finally placed our order for our meals. My husband asked for a coffee, when it came – there was no sugar on the table – he kept asking for some sugar by the time it finally came his coffee was cold!

We shared an entrée of oysters which was very nice. Then we waited and waited and waited for our main courses.

Whilst we waited, a waitress came around to 3 other tables telling the people that the course that there was a problem with one of the orders, each table hadn’t ordered the meal she mentioned. She didn’t seem to know who or what had been ordered by anyone! Food and drinks were being delivered to wrong tables consistently.

In the mean time, we were still waiting for our main courses. By now, we had started to ask the waiter where our meals were, we were told ours was the next meal to come out. (Tables around us who had come in after us had by now their main courses). Another 15 minutes or so later we again asked where our meal was, to be told that the hold up was the ‘steak’ we had ordered – BUT WE HADN’T ORDERED STEAK! Then the problem was that we had ordered an entrée, lots of excuses but not one apology for the way we were treated. We then asked for the bill for what we had had one coffee and one entrée. We waited and waited, then all of a sudden meals appeared! They had been sitting somewhere and were cold. We told them that they weren’t acceptable and told them we wanted the bill. Paid for what we had and went and found another place to eat. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. It’s a wonder it is still in business if it is run this way.

“Perfect steak and salad, fantastic wine.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2013

The tables and chairs are basic but beautifylly positioned on the viaduct.
The food is served perfectly and the wait staff polite and accomodating ,the atomosphere lovely.
We have eaten here a few times and it never disappoints, I have my steaks well done and my husband rare, many restaurants cannot execute this but these chefs manage it with ease.

The seafood is always fresh and tasty and the wine ice cold .

“Good food once it arrived...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2013 via mobile

This place is in need of an experienced front of house manager. The two guys who seemed to be ordering wait staff around were confused and when dealing with customers directly were disinterested. One of these appeared to be an owner. This lack of direction from the top lead to the more than adequate number of staff wandering around instead of serving. Food and drinks were being delivered to wrong tables consistently.

An hour for a main meal to arrive is acceptable but not when most of that hour was sat with empty glasses. Each round of drinks was ordered at least twice before being received; 2 out of 3 rounds of drinks were delivered to the table with wrong beer/ wine (only 4 people at table). Never an apology even when error was highlighted or when an order had to be re-ordered.

The real shame is that the food was good; medium rare steak came out medium- medium rare which was surprising. And it was tasty. The serves were not large by any means, but we were not going to order dessert and wait another hour.

In the competitive market of viaduct harbour it is surprising this business is viable. Within a stones throw are Soul and Mecca- we ate at both a couple years ago on our last visit and were impressed by both.
