“A lovely experience”
Reviewed August 2, 2013 via mobile

I went to the French cafe with a special friend I wanted to thank. We had a lovely meal, a la carte. The quality of the food was impeccable with original dishes and subtle flavours. It lived up to its reputation. Only two negatives for me were the slightly pretentious service, and the overall ambiance, which I found cold by wanting to be too slick and modern.

“Deserves its rank as Number 1 Auckland Restaurant”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

Whenever you go to the French Cafe it is an occasion as well as a meal. The staff are friendly, welcoming and impeccably trained, the ambiance of the rooms is buzzy but very elegant, and the food is absolutely superb. Always. This wonderful place just never fails - we have been coming here for years and it just gets better and better. I am just sorry that you have to book a couple of weeks ahead for a Friday or Saturday because all foodie tourists must try this restaurant.

“Degustation menu - well constructed, great flavours, great experience”
Reviewed July 13, 2013

We had the degustation menu for four people. We found the one at French Café well constructed, well presented, a great mix and progression of flavours and some standout dishes.

Was not too sure about some of the wine matches so would give this a miss next time.
Have not been to this restaurant for a number of years but it has really kept it's standards up.

Only niggle is that you don't get one or two waiters, pretty much each dish was presented by a different waiter, which seemed a bit 'production like' and not expected at this class of restaurant. So you did not feel 'special' in the service attention area.

However, a great meal and would recommend.

“No "wow" factor”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

The food is good - very good in fact. Having said that there is something missing - there was no "wow" with the food. As we typically do, we chose the tasting menu so there was plenty of opportunity for the kitchen to strut its stuff and show us that they are better than just very good. Instead it was a safe offering - nothing really to challenge us or the kitchen.

Don't get me wrong on this - French Café is still amongst Auckland's best. However if they want to foot it with the worlds best then they have to do more.

Service and the surroundings were largely without fault. We opted for the wine pairing and were disappointed that generic glasses were used for red and white wines. Having a pinot noir served in the same style glass as a cabernet is an unhappy compromise that you won't find in restaurants that really care about their wine.
