This is a restaurant with flair and panache which has been at the top of Auckand's fine dining scene for many years. Husband-and-wife team Simon and Creghan manage the almost impossible and make it look easy: giving you a great dining experience in a friendly and professional way while making you feel completely at ease.

Firstly, the food is outstanding, whether you are choosing from the degustation menu (6 or 8 courses, with the option of pairing each course with a carefully-chosen glass of wine) or a la carte. These are flavours and presentations which are fresh and thoughtful and the taste has you saying to yourself "boy, I wish I could do this at home". There are seasonal changes and Head Chef Simon is always on the lookout for something different and special.

Then the service. Front of house leader Creghan chooses her waiting team carefully. Everyone is knowledgeable and friendly and you get exactly the service you want. The staff make time to chat if you want to chat, and leave you alone if you don't. This creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere quite unlike the stuffiness you can find elsewhere.

But the French Cafe is not resting on its laurels. Recent developments have seen space at the rear of the restaurant developed into a lovely sheltered courtyard. This has outdoor seating, a herb garden and mini-orchard with apple, lime and olive trees and a private dining area for groups.

Deserves 6 stars.

Outstanding first class, top-drawer restaurant that deserves its high ranking. The wait staff are very knowledgeable about the food, its preparation and the wines.

The chef & kitchen staff take classic French & add innovations & new techniqes. All courses were impecably presented w/flourish.

We both started w/the lobster topped w/tomato granitti & heirloom tomato salad --- this had unexpected herb & melon flavors. Wonderful fresh bread. Complimentary carrot soup topped w/maple foam. 2nd: Egg gold ravioli w/ prociultto & parmesan. Main: duck leg confit was outstanding --- crispy on the outside & juicy inside. Lamb w/figs, madiera reduction sauce accompanied by spinach w/wasabi on top.

The French wine pairing suggestions (Sancerre, Loire & Bordeaux) were excellent.

We finished w/: predessert: mandarin orange/vanilla yogurt/mint to cleanse the palate. Then poached pear covered w/caramel, 2 kinds of cream, raisins.

We had walked from our hotel; however an unexpected hard rain appeared while at the carfe; so the wait staff was kind enough to summon a cab.

The only other restaurant which provided this high level of dining was the True South Dining in Queenstown. Both provided very memorable experiences. Other patrons appreciated the excellent quality & elegant ambience & demonstrated by being well-dressed.

We began our experience as we were greated by a French waiter. Loved the accent!! He was very obliging with suggestions and patience, as it was so hard to choose what to have.
The food was to die for, and the matching wines exquisite. A 'must' to add to your holiday dining list!
