I think we would have liked Soul more if we had eaten there before we had eaten at Euro. We ate there the next night and while the food was quite good, I think we were both a little disappointed because of how amazing Euro was. I had the tuna, my wife had the John Dory with the shellfish risotto.
I liked my tuna, but it's my favorite food in the world and I've had better. It was perfectly cooked, but I don't like fennel particularly and I didn't think the pepper salsa added much. My wife had a very good first John Dory experience and the risotto was very good. If I had had risotto with my tuna instead of the fennel I probably would have liked it much more.
The truffle mashed potatoes were awesome.
I didn't like my beer. I think it was a Mac's Gold, but it was basically an $8 glass of Miller Lite. Bleh. Can't hold that against the restaurant, but yeah.
We didn't care for our server. Nothing stood out that was particularly wrong with him, but neither one of us liked him all that much. We sat inside and something was making a really annoying noise throughout the meal. We never figured out what it was. It may have been a signal that food was up, but it was annoying as all get out. The patio would have been nicer, but they were filled up and we didn't have a booking.
This review is probably more negative than it should be. The food was good and we'd absolutely go back at some point. But it'd be a once every 6 months place rather than a once a month place like Euro would be if we lived in Auckland.
