Have had both dinner and lunch at Soul. Its a good place to sit back and watch the Auckland visitors pass by admire the launches parked in the front yard. The food is consistently good, the staff very professional. The seafood is excellent.

This place is pretty average. We arrived on a wet and windy Saturday night looking for somewhere with ambiance. This place did not do it for us. We were in the middle of the room surrounded by other dinners. The service was good and the waiter friendly. If you don't like sea food it was hard to find a delectable dish. We left without desert as it was overpriced as was the main course. I think we were paying for the location of the viaduct.

The Verdict area is a great place to spend a night out so the venue is excellent
Was dining with a group of 60 odd people in our group with a 3 course menu @ NZD 87.00 P.P plus drinks.Food nice but you do not get a lot on your plate for the $ paid.
Service very good - but focussed on pumping patrons through E.G Arrived approx 1830 hours and but 2000 hours meal all over..... Guess it is one way to make money on the booze bill as our coach was not to pick our group up until 2300 hours.
YES I was disappointed !!!!.

Soul Bar and Bistro
Add to trip
Viaduct Harbour, Auckland Central 1001, New Zealand

Apparently the Soul Bar and Bistro is a bit of a revered institution on the waterfront in Auckland. Good food, beautiful people. Unfortunately, the day we visited the lunchtime workers looked pretty stressed and the food could hardly be rated as anything better than mediocre. Service was very slow and not particularly, and for the total package the price was pretty steep.

The Scampi cocktail with whipped avocado and Moroccan ketchup came highly recommended, but was a wipe-out. There simple was not much of it in a tall cocktail glass and what was there was not much more than mush and at $28.50 the price was ridiculous. Salt + pepper squid, almond skordalia and smoked chilli oil was passable in a basic way while the Pan fried local scallops with cauliflower puree, yuzu and orange grenobloise and pork crackling did show a modicum of character.

For the mains, the Waikanae crab ravioli, lemon butter sauce and toasted leeks was again rather basic with no great flair, while the Roasted hapuku “petit pois a la Francaise” with green pea puree and crisp smoky pancetta and Pan fried snapper with green papaya, coriander and mint salad with mango dressing and toasted peanuts could at best be described as nutrition. The Pan fried john dory and smoked octopus with preserved lemon tabouleh and roasted vine tomatoes was the disaster of the day, being dry and tasteless. This total bland feel was accentuated by a slab of dry and chewy “something”, which was probably octopus, but at least the tomato was refreshing.

Big picture? No soul at the Soul. Quite a few of the quick and easy cafes adjacent looked to have more refreshing fare.

Professional service and friendly. Great place well situated looking out to harbour. Staff helpful and friendly, food very tasty and well presented and finer details of putting a little Christmas touch to the desserts.
