Food was very average, Marinara pizza was extremely salty.
The apple crumble dessert was from those frozen sections from the supermarket, utterly disappointed.
When we paid our bill was over $200 for 5 people! only to realised that we've been over charged with two extra desserts and a main meal on top of that. Simply unacceptable.

Luckily we did not read the previous review for this restaurant. Things have changed here! We first ate here in November 2009, when we first arrived in NZ for our 5-month "down under" adventure. We chose it because it was only a few blocks from our hotel and because it was so lovely, with white linen tablecloths and napkins, sparkling wine glasses - and, of course, because the menu looked delicious.
We were warmly greeted, although we had no reservation. We brought our own wine, which was fine (always a crucial plus to dining in NZ and Australia). We decided to order the 2 specials, one fresh fish and the other, a meat (we can't remember what it was, sorry). Thank heavens, we did not order an antipasto or side salad. The servings were huge! Perfectly prepared fish and meat, each lightly covered with a different sauce that complimented, and with a pile of fresh vegetables, also cooked to al dente perfection, and some of the always delicious NZ potatoes, cooked so you can taste their fresh sweet "potato-ness". (Would be the rest of the world had such great potatoes.) Sorry about that run-on sentence, but the entire dish was so perfect, everything complimenting everything else on our plates. It was sooo good!
The price? Just under $60 NZ. Total. This in a country where breakfast for 2 routinely runs over $30.
Fast forward to March, where we are now back in Auckland for our last few days before returning to the northern hemisphere. Two nights ago, we returned to the Milano, where we ordered (having forgotten the size of the mains, but remembering they were delicious) an Insalata Caprese to start with for $14NZ. It came with rocket (arrugula), mozzerella cheese, truly lovely anchovies, and tomatoes, in a balsamic drizzled dressing.
For our mains, I ordered the fresh fish special of snapper. Again, the fish was topped by a lovely sauce, this time with capers that salted my mouth and brought the taste of the snapper to the forefront, bite by heavenly bite. Fresh, crunchy green beans and lovely just cooked broccoli accompanied those decadently wonderful potatoes. My partner ordered from the menu the steak with peppercorns. To die for! A big, THICK, juicy steak, cooked "crudo" (rare), with the same vegetables, but in a peppercorn sauce that was just so good. Although we had again brought a bottle of wine, white, to top off the steak gluttony, a glass of their Montepulciano was ordered for $11NZ. Although light on the nose, the wine tasted most delicious. Perfect. Total for this meal was $88NZ.
Well, last night, our last in NZ, we went back there AGAIN. They laughed when they saw us, and again, OMG, it was beyond good again. Specials were John Dory fish - perfectly prepared, and rack of lamb (4 1/2 lovely fat chops, cooked perfectly). Wiser about the serving size this time, we did not order a salad. So, we were full of lovely, delicious food at the end of the meal: $58NZ.
Our waitress was a stunningly lovely young woman from Brazil (!), who charmed everyone with her smile. She gave attentive service, was much in demand for just talking with, but always saw that our water glasses were refilled, and checked on our liking of the meal.
There were always other patrons in the restaurant, with a table of 10 coming in one night, just after 9, for dinner (this is, after all, an Italian restaurant). And, last night, at 9:15, a weary couple with 4 young children came in - a high chair was produced - and Hawaiian pizza quickly ordered for the 3 boys (the baby did not participate). Oh yes, the children were well-behaved, so we and the other diners were not disturbed.
Go, eat - no, dine. This was the best food we had in five months of eating our way around the North and South Islands. In fact, we're somewhat depressed that we have to leave. . .

Milano was recommended to us by a local when we asked where we could get a great Italian meal. It was easily the worst meal of our two-week trip.

The waitress was obviously having a bad night and acted as if us arriving for dinner was a huge inconvenience for her, even though we'd made a reservation and only two other tables were occupied. She and the pizza cook spent most of our meal chatting loudly about conspiracy theories around Heath Ledger's death.

The antipasto plate was four kinds of low-quality processed meats, half a tinned artichoke, cheap sundried tomatoes and some bland cheese. Poor value for $22.

I had spaghetti pescatora, which was okay but a very stingy helping. Apparently the pizza was 'okay' (but this comes from a person who believes there's no such thing as a bad pizza). We had to ask twice for our side salad, which came drenched in a creamy bottled dressing.

Needless to say, no tip and no return visit!

Awesome Italian food, especially the pepper steak and the lasange. Garlic bread is great too.
