I visited in december and hot footed over to get a pint of their excelent home brewed beer, shock and horror greeted me as not one real ale hand pump was evident on the bar.

Th lady serving said that they had to stop brewing as the demand wasn't high enough to justify the cost of the brewing, what a sad demise for aucklanders and visitors alike.

I guess the locals prefer all the horrible fizzy soda like muck thats brewed in NZ, its a sad loss for auckland indeed.

How the mighty have fallen, used to be a great Auckland pub that I patronised every time I came up from Wellington, but now it is shabby and neglected, the floors need repair urgently, the people who hang around the poker machines (the only room to have money spent on it) are pretty nasty looking, food is basic and boring and the beer seems to have changed for the worse. Some staff are overworked and do their best, the rest are just not interested and the rooms need a good clean up with a fridge or even a pillow (I had to ask for one). The lower bar has some unsavoury types in there late at night and a guy was arrested with a gun in the pub a couple of months ago.Good position in the centre of the central business district so if that is what you are after go for it. Lack of internet was frustrating. They have long term residents too.

Fantastically located small hotel in Auckland. Rooms are situated above a pub, but as they are on the 3rd and 4th floors there was no issue of noise. There is no lift, which is maybe the only downside for some people, however i think a few stairs are good for us sometimes!!!The room we stayed in was quite small but clean, modern and comfortable, with everything we needed just for our short stay.
The pub downstairs has a good range of beers and very good value food - just simple pub grub for the budget conscious traveller!
Great stay, nice staff, perfect location and for a city centre hotel i had some good nights sleep!

Getting there is easy as the bus from the airport drops you about a block and a half from the hotel. The cost of the bus is $16 NZD / person, but still cheaper than a taxi unless you have at least 3 to 4 people going.

We stayed in room 7, which was very small, but very comfy. The bed was a queen and was very comfortable. The shower was a tight fit for me (i'm 6'6"), but had good water pressure. The cable, as others have mentioned, didn't offer a lot, but this hotel should be for those who don't want to spend a lot of time in their rooms anyway. It's a great place for those just needing a place to crash for a good price, but with more privacy than a hostel (backpacker). Its location is great. It's in the heart of downtown and walking distance to the wharf, ferries, university, sky tower, restuarants, museum, Albert Park, etc.

The front desk is the bar of the brewery. The brewery is open 24 hours a day Wed - Sat. Sun - Tues they close at 11. This is a recent change as they used to be open 24/7 apparently. Despite being on the fourth floor, we were awakened by patrons of the brewery singing loudly at 3 to 4 am on our second night (a Wednesday). This is the only reason we gave a rating of 3 for Sleep Quality. If not for that, it would have been higher.

The staff was friendly and helpful the entire time.

As others have mentioned, there is no elevator and your room will be on the third or fourth floor. Going up and down the stairs will provide a good warmup for the many hills of Auckland surrounding the hotel though. :)

Overall, we really enjoyed the Shakespeare and would definitely return.

Right in the middle of it all in downtown Auckland. Great old building with a bar/brewery downstairs and affordable small rooms upstairs. Very friendly and helpful staff, worth checking out if you enjoy a good beer, simple and clean rooms, and a good value.

I stayed here only one night prior to traveling to the South Island. It's a basic hotel with brew pub downstairs. After a long flight from the US, they let me in my room at 7:30 AM and gave me an upgrade to a funky, charming room on the third floor. It's an old Victorian building, so I don't think that they really have the ability to easily put an elevator into the building. It's right on the bus line from the airport so easy to get to. The pub doesn't seem like it ever gets too raucous even though it's open 24 hours.

We stayed in this hotel after a 4 week trip through New Zealand. We had a room at the top floor, it's a small room, but with a good bed. We could step outside to a small balcony. Beware of the pidgeons! The cleanliness of the bathroom could be better.
The hotelrooms are part of the shakespeare pub. The pub is open 24/7 but that didn't bother us, it wasn't very busy and we didn't hear any noise. The staff is friendly.
The great thing is, it's only 2 minutes walk to Queens street and 10 minutes to the harbour. The taxi arranged by the hotel took us in 20 minutes to the airport for only 35 nzd. (The bus is 30 nzd for 2 persons). The cheapest and fastest internet we have seen in NZ just around the corner in a supermarket, open till 9pm.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
