Just can only reiterarte all the positive things that have been said here. As for the one or two negative things that have been said , I think people have to put it into a price relativity context. If you had paid 150$ for this accommodation then one could niggle about a few things but since the prices are rock bottom for Auckland or NZ in general it is more than value for money.I really could not belive what I was getting for my money, absoloutly top bargain.
Room was on the top which is no problem going up the stairs , even at my age! : ) And it was superbaly clean, had enough coffe and tea for the 4 nights, space enough for a couple easily and the location has to be the best in Auckland, 1 min from Queen st. and 2 mins from the Wharf.
Staff were great and the bar was fab , met so many nice people there, locals , staff and travellers alike.
I´ll be back in Auckland soon and will def. stay here again.

We had a good stay at the hotel. It is small and quaint, and yes, it is very old, but our room was clean and the bathroom was updated. It is not a glamour hotel so if you are looking for something with all the modern conveniences and services, this is not it. If you want something a little different and don't mind small and cheap...then this could be for you. The bartender doubles as the reception desk clerk and the gal who was on duty the night we were there was very friendly, helpful and informative. We did have to carry our luggage up the grand staircase, which was a slight problem, but if we hadn't been leaving so early in the morning we could have left the luggage downstairs in a lock-up.

The beer and food in the tavern is quite good. We had a Shakespeare Burger and fries and it was great...so big, we were happy to split it. We didn't hear any noise from the tavern, but there was some from the street all night. We were there on a Saturday night and apparently there is a lot of partying on streets in downtown Auckland on the weekends so this was not really a problem of the hotel, just the location...part of the fun of the CBD.

We took the Airbus from the airport to the city and the hotel was only one uphill block from stop #4.

Despite its exterior and bar which is great on a nice day or night, this accommodation is perfect for those wanting something a little different close to the Auckland CBD. Amazing old building with plenty of history, grand staircase which is impressive. Very clean tidy rooms complete with tea and coffee making facilities. Clean bathroom, nice comfortable bed with electric blankets plus bar fridge. Nice big flat screen tv discretely recessed in the wall to not take up valuablr space in the small but cosy room. Storage facilities are lacking and some decor issues in rooms ie bed side light switch broken, room wall lighting broken but overall for the price and character you get from this place you really are hard pressed to find better. Restaurant downstairs runs mon-fri and bar is open all week so you have all you need in this place. Great for couples or itinerant travelers wanting something central away from the noise of queen st (which is very loud at times). Overall very impressed. I'll be back.

We spent a night at the Shakespeare hotel recently and had an awesome night. The bar was fun, great staff and awesome food. We had a room on the top floor. The staircase is amazing and the room very cool. The place is over 100 years old and it's very cool the way they have kept the charm of the old place while including all the mod-cons. Great to be in central city and amazing value for money. Will stay there again.

Room Tip: Top floor is worth the trip.

I stayed at this hotel for one night before I moved to a longer term accommodation. I was in a hurry and did not check the reviews of this hotel. Otherwise, I would have never checked in. I had the room on the top, and I had a 25 kg bag with me, so it was quite a calf workout going all the way up to my room.

The room is basic and it was a bit dusty in some corners and it did not have any view. It was hot at night; no air conditioning or even an old fan. The TV was too high and the room is cramped so there was no were to sit properly and watch. This is no where being Boutique which they claim.

On the good side, the staff are wonderful and helpful and very welcoming. The food at their restaurant was great as well. I would certainly recommend the Hamlet choice of chicken burger.

In all, I would not recommend this hotel for more than a single night.

Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Rooms were adequate: clean, nice crisp sheets, toiletries.
The location is great, very central. However this has drawbacks as there is a club just down the road and there is traffic throughout the night. You'd get this with any city centre hotel, unless they have excellent sound-proofing, which is unlikely at this budget.
There are a lot of stairs, so this is definitely not suitable if you have trouble with them. The staff are happy to store big bags downstairs, so tactical packing is a good idea.

Room Tip: Top floor are apparently larger, so if you have the stamina...

We checked into the Shakespeare fresh off of the plane, they had our room ready early and we enjoyed a tasty lunch out on the terrace at the Pub in the hotel. I would call our room on the top floor more cozy than small, just right for two adults! Great central location and we would totally stay here again!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
