Amazing B&b.a magical 'get away from it all' weekend.Wonderful hosts and ambience.
Sitting in the library in front of the fire ,with a glass of red wine, great company, great conversation was a prelude to a wonderful stay.

Will be my monthly 'get away from it " from now on.

i'll be honest, even after reading reviews and their website, i wasn't sure what to expect when i booked the sunderland house. it seemed fancier than other b&bs my husband and i have stayed at and i was afraid the hosts would not be down to earth.

boy, was i wrong. on arrival to their beautiful house, we were greeted very warmly by donald who was putting out a welcome sign for us. definitely a first for us and it set the tone for our entire stay. he brought us to our room and gave us a tour of his house. there was a guest kitchenette for making teas and coffees as well as homebaked treats. their library is also open to guests and we were fortunate enough to have a nice conversation one night with donald, kathy and another guest. with the fireplace roaring and glasses of wine, we felt like more than guests. even ben their sweet springer spaniel joined us.

after a good night's rest in their comfortable bed (with electric blankets!), we woke up to the smell of freshly baked muffins. breakfast was plentiful and always included a full plate of fruit. donald was nice enough to explain some of the local fruits to us. (he will also cook a wonderful hot breakfast if requested) donald and kathy were so helpful in planning our day. i really could not have asked for a better place to end our trip.

(on a side note, make sure to watch donald's dvd located in the guest kitchenette. i think it was called intrepid journeys. if you love travel shows like us, it's worth a watch. it was very interesting and entertaining.)

We both travel a lot for work and have stayed in some great hotels, but this was really one of the best experiences we have ever had. The place and hospitality were faultless. I don't need to repeat the comments already here, but in summary, we'd not stay anywhere else in Auckland, and would recommend Sunderland House to anyone. The attention to detail in everything, the decor, the fantastic Barista-coffee, the breakfast, the complimentary snacks and drinks, was super. We had the Premier Suite which had an amazing claw foot bath and balcony with view over the city. We looked at all three rooms and all are lovely.

When booking, we initially were looking for a city centre hotel and hesitated slightly over the Ponsonby location. Looking back, we wouldn't want to stay in the city centre, the suburban restaurants and bars were lovely and had far more character than the city centre in the evening. (Incidentally, Donald and Kathy's restaurant recommendations were superb.) The bus to the city centre was cheap and efficient, and the stop just a few metres from the house, so no hassle at all.

A superb place with superb hosts, don't stay anywhere else in Auckland.

Donald and Kathy are the most hospitable hosts, welcoming us warmly, and showing us around their gorgeous and sophisticated Sunderland House B&B. Some of the charming touches included home-made baking, a library for us to use, complimentary port and chocolates in our bedroom, Ben their loveable Springer Spaniel and a sumptuous breakfast by candlelight. The minute we walked in we felt like old friends, conversation flowed freely, and we really enjoyed their company.
We stayed in the Premier Suite and it was the best night's sleep we'd had in months! We slept in until almost 11am! And Kathy graciously accommodated us for what was in fact brunch not breakfast by that time. The decor of the entire house is something to luxuriate in - every room was so beautifully appointed - books, art and flowers abound. Our room also had a dainty balcony with a view of the Sky Tower.
The B&B is in a central city suburb yet far enough removed from the hubbub of the CBD that you do feel away from it all. However great restaurants and shopping are only minutes away.
Thank you Donald and Kathy, you really spoilt us. I have never felt so pampered and relaxed! We wholeheartedly recommend your B&B to someone looking for a get-away in elegant surroundings, with warm hosts and unforgettable charm.

Superior hospitality, room service, private kitchen with home baked muffins and continental breakfast. Surrounded by luxury, our room was serviced with fresh thick towels to embrace after a soothing soak in the deep bath, warm tiled floors, chocolates, decanted port, fine bed linen, lavish soft furnishings and antique furniture. I loved the private balcony, stunning view of the sky tower and the night lights. Walking distance to our spa retreat and fine dining. Donald, Kathy and Ben were perfect hosts, resourceful and creative with a sound knowledge of the area, the arts and horticulture. Rejuvenating and inspirational experience. Sunderland - welcome to our 'must do again' diary.
