We were in Auckland for a few days and dined here for breakfast and lunch and a after dinner desert
We loved the atmosphere the new york style and the fact that Al Brown was there eating and made time to speck with us and share a little of his vision
If you cant get to new york get here they are one in the same
No fancy flat whites or lattes just good old school perked coffee and boy was it good. i am a big flat white man but i maybe a convert to filter coffee thanks Al awesome diner .

The Maitre'D must have thought we slept under the table as we were there after our show for pie a la mode and back again for breakfast !
Al Brown has captured the essence of a New York delicatessen perfectly.
The restaurant is a long room with open kitchen at one side, booth seating the other side and table seatings of two and four in the middle.
The wait staff look great in pale aqua old style uniforms and couldn't be more helpful. My companion coming down with bad cough asked for hot lemon and brandy which was not a problem. We settled for a slice of apple pie and New York cheesecake.
Breakfast offers not a huge selection from 7am till 11.30 and then a more comprehensive menu. We picked Al Brown Ugly bagels with peanut butter, cream cheese and raspberry jam and salmon with onion, dill and capers. Coffee is served in mugs - black or white ( $3.50 ) with frequent offers of top ups.
The cinnamon buns looked really good.
The rest of the menu looked typically New York deli style with sides of latkes, hot dog , poutine which I haven't seen on a menu since visiting Quebec and favourites such as pastrami hash, Rueben sandwiches, lox, pickled pork and smoked mullet.
Service was very efficient and friendly.
Al Brown has created a unique dining experience for Aucklanders in a casual and most enjoyable way. I can't wait to try it again.

I'm just going to tell you about one amazing thing about this place. I went a day after it had officially opened and what was truly amazing was how well it was working. It was as if it had always been here. This is a classy joint. It's different to anything else in Auckland (and I'd venture to say in the rest of NZ) and that's what makes it amazing. Al Brown has a real eye for bringing a fresh perspective to eating. After all, this is basically a casual eating place but with Al's attention to detail and insistence on excellence he has transformed "The Fed" into an experience. Everything works. The wait staff uniforms, the chunky white coffee mugs, the open kitchen, the banquettes, and (of course) the food.
I love this place. Next time I'll tell you about the cinnamon buns.

Al Brown's latest endeavour has been open less than two weeks but the atmosphere matches our experience of Katz's Deli on the Lower East Side of Manhattan which has been serving for over 70 years.
The man himself, Al Brown was there serving customers and mentoring & bedding in his team on some of the finer points of delivering the customer experience that signifies his other three establishments (The Depot next door; Best Ugly Bagel 300m down the road; and Logan Brown in Wellington which was voted NZ's top restaurant for many years when he owned it in partnership with Steve Logan).
No reservations are allowed and we had a short 15 minute wait to get a seat and that wait was a investment towards a great experience. We have been in many delis & diners in the States from Katz's Deli in Manhattan to those in small hick towns in South Dakota; and the Federal Deli has that American atmosphere & level of service from the get go. The service is polished & smooth now and the team have only just started. The place was buzzing but not too noisy.
Lets get onto the food, a small menu of 20 items helped reduce the time needed to ponder & make a choice because even that short list made for hard decisions to be made.
The meat sandwiches & Bagels matched Katz's Deli; and the NY Cheese Cake matched that of Paramount Café in New York's Time Square.
Al Brown has brought his detailed research & planning to the establishment of the Federal Deli and it is certain to be a success. I certain recommend a visit, and you will certain return to try the remaining items on the menu.
