Sandringham Road Village in Auckland is the city's Little India. The density of Indian businesses here - restaurants, grocery shops, butchers etc - gives the village colour and life, transporting one out of mainstream Auckland for a little while. The restaurants here offer some of the best authentic Indian cuisine at very affordable prices.
Taste of Sri Lanka is towards the end of the village drag coming from the city. It does not look too flash from the outside but do not let that put you off. The restaurant is decked out to look like a food shack in the inside with a small number of tables. However, anything on the menu is also available for takeaway. There is a great selection of rotis including murtabak -stuffed roti with minced meat, a favourite in Malaysia and Singapore - and curries. Their "lump rice" or banana leaf rice which is rice served with curry, egg, vegetables and chutney on banana leaves, is a real winner. A portion is NZD15.00 and is large enough for two for small eaters. The curries are typical South Indian style which is more tamarind based and not as rich as Northern Indian counterparts.
Prices are very reasonable and great value for money.
If taking away, one might like to pick up a few curries for variety. Across the road and slightly further down is Bawarchi's serving Mughal style curries which are quite different from Taste of Sri Lanka. Further up - also across the road- is Paradise which has mouth watering lollipop chicken, a must try.
