“A gem in Auckland's Little India”

Sandringham Road Village in Auckland is the city's Little India. The density of Indian businesses here - restaurants, grocery shops, butchers etc - gives the village colour and life, transporting one out of mainstream Auckland for a little while. The restaurants here offer some of the best authentic Indian cuisine at very affordable prices.

Taste of Sri Lanka is towards the end of the village drag coming from the city. It does not look too flash from the outside but do not let that put you off. The restaurant is decked out to look like a food shack in the inside with a small number of tables. However, anything on the menu is also available for takeaway. There is a great selection of rotis including murtabak -stuffed roti with minced meat, a favourite in Malaysia and Singapore - and curries. Their "lump rice" or banana leaf rice which is rice served with curry, egg, vegetables and chutney on banana leaves, is a real winner. A portion is NZD15.00 and is large enough for two for small eaters. The curries are typical South Indian style which is more tamarind based and not as rich as Northern Indian counterparts.
Prices are very reasonable and great value for money.

If taking away, one might like to pick up a few curries for variety. Across the road and slightly further down is Bawarchi's serving Mughal style curries which are quite different from Taste of Sri Lanka. Further up - also across the road- is Paradise which has mouth watering lollipop chicken, a must try.

It's the only Sri Lankan restaurant in auckland and you should try it. V tasty home cooked type food. The dosa and handkerchief rotis are a must. Nice atmosphere for a cheap night out. Next time I am going for the crab and mutton curry. Devine.......

Run by a delightful husband and wife team from Kaluthara, 7Siri is Auckland's best Sri Lankan restaurant by a country mile. All the staples are on offer, from hoppers and dosai to lump rice and crab curry, at prices from $5 to $20. The lump rice - three curries, chutney and pickle on spicy coconut rice in a banana leaf - is a $15 offering, and it's enough for two meals for anyone with a reasonable appetite! One of my faves is the $10 Pol Roti meal - two delicious stuffed breads with a choice of curry and chutney, quite enough for a toothsome lunch. There are only 20 seats in this tiny but atmospheric room and, to be fair, it's not a "romanticnightout" sort of place, but face it - you're there for the food, and you just won't be disappointed. Exceptional value for money.
