A headland near the old suburb of Devonport. Either travel to by car or take the ferry from downtown terminal and enjoy the ride. Walk through the old homes and churches to North Head and enjoy the steady safe climb to the top. Here you will see old gun placements overlooking Auckland and old bunkers overlooking Rangitoto. First set up in the early 1900's due to the so called scare of the Russian invasion. It was also used as lookouts during both world wars. At the base areas have been dug out and were used by the nearby naval base as a munitions site. enjoy the walk, feel the wind and salt blow off the Waitemata harbour. If catching a ferry, enjoy the small cafes in Devonport or the wharf before the ride back to downtown Auckland.

This volcanic cone is a former defence site and an important lookout, easy accessible with ferry from Auckland to Davenport (at least 27 times a day). It offers views over the Hauraki Gulf including Rangitoto Island and also Auckland CBD.

If the weather is good and you're looking for a short outing, a trip to North Head is just the thing. Lots of historical tidbits scattered atop the volcanic cone and an easy walking trail takes you around the top of the mount. Kids will enjoy exploring the tunnels and bunkers and adults will marvel at clear views of the city and surrounds. Go here at the beginning of your trip to get your bearings of Auckland and its neighborhoods and landmarks.

This area at the tip of Devonport in Auckland is a great visit. Aside from the old military tunnels, and gun emplacements, you get a brilliant view of Auckland Central accross the harbour. North head is a volcanic cone, which is why after a little climb to the top, you can understand why the views are so good. Walking around to the seaward side gives you an excellent view of Rangitoto Island in the middle of the harbour. Rangitoto Island is also a volcano. North Head is worth a visit, but it is a very popular place and therefore it is busy especially during the summer months.

My last visit to North Head, a trip I always enjoy, was made even better by downloading a self-walk guide from the Department of Conservation website http://www.doc.govt.nz/Documents/conservation/historic/by-region/north-head-self-guided-walk.pdf
This guide was a fantastic addition to my usual stroll as it highlighted many of the historical facts about the area. Numbered pegs dotting the North Head landscape relate to the info contained in this useful booklet, making for very interesting, amusing and awe-inspiring reading.
If history isn't your thing, the views from North Head are spectacular. On a blue sky day, Auckland looks incredible.
