“Immaculate decor, great welcome, fab food...”
Reviewed June 4, 2014

Such an unexpected delight to come across this place. The owner guided me carefully through the choices, and I was not disappointed in the wonderful chicken stew that arrived, complete with Ethiopian style bread! Very filling and lovingly cooked and presented, I left basking in the warmth of the welcome and in the nourishment of the tasty meal itself.

“Great little place!”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

We enjoy trying something different - and this was great. The food was delicious and the experience definitely authentic - no cutlery here! The place is very brightly painted making it seem cheerful, the owners are a delight ( extremely pleasant and helpful ) and the coffee at the end is worth having. Overall a fabulous addition to Auckland's ethnic cuisine.

“Great to try something new - lovely host”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

We were intrigued to try Ethiopian food so we took a trip to Mt Roskill to eat at Cafe Abyssinia. We had sample platter of 5 different dishes. I was unsure at first because it seemed like the lady was trying to push us into ordering a vegetable platter also but we were soon won over by her great sense of humour and lovely smile. We ended up having a good laugh with her. The food arrives and is tipped onto the bread which you tuck into. The Kai Sega Wot (beef stew) was amazing. Tender beef in a rich and very tasty sauce I would go back just to have this dish. The lamb was also great. All in all it was a very enjoyable meal and we were looked after by a lovely, down to earth host.

“Small slice of Addis Abeba in Auckland”
Reviewed December 4, 2013

After developing a strong desire for Ethiopian food in Melbourne, I was very keen to try this place. The food here is to die for and at the price, you satisfy your hunger with no issue. We tried the kitfo and vegetarian combinations (3 different vegetarian dishes). This is one of the few, if only, places in Auckland to do traditional Ethiopian coffee. The coffee is quite strong but satisfying and it comes served with burning frankincense. Remember that this is an unlicenced cafe so alcohol is not served. Service here is hospitable and humble, never encountered any bad instance in the times that we've been here. After finishing your meal, staff will come to your table to wash your hands - where else in Auckland does that? Forget pretentious fine dining, if you want a unique meal experience then come here!

“Excellent!”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

Great food, very authentic. Service was very friendly. When I asked for a recommendation the lady offered to do a mix of all their dishes. Delicious.

It's not exactly an attractive place, so not suitable to take a date, but the food is very good.
