The island is a perfect place to be if you have a spare half a day in Auckland region. It doesn't take too long to walk it throughout but the scenery (even if you do not like the birds) is pretty cool: rocky coastline, nice hills and fresh forests. The birds though are all over the place: out of 8 species mentioned in the official guide we encountered 13, and it was pretty exciting to watch them in their natural habitat and in close up. There's a lighthouse and souvenir shop but no cafes or restaurants as it's a natural reserve. Make sure you use a toilet next to the wharf as the're only 2 of them in the whole island; unless you want to be memorized by destroying the habitat for endangered species by taking a piss in a company of few kiwis left over there.

Can you imagine NZ before Humans burnt the forrest, turned birds into feather cloaks and planted grass for farms everywhere?
Step onto Tiri and you step back in time. A wonderful heritage island restored so that we can experience the birdlife in the forrest as prolific as they once were. sit quietly and the birds come right up to you. recommended for all tourists and locals too.

Worth the $59 i paid to get from Gulf harbour to the island. The weather is fairly important and you do need to be patient with the wildlife if you are wanting to take photos. Wildlife is fantastic as are the numerous sea views around the island.

From the moment you get on the 360° Ferry you are in another world.

You can leave your lunch bags with the truck so you don't have to carry them and they will be at the visitor's Centre when you finish your walk. They then take them back down to the ferry for you! They even provide free cups of tea and coffee. What more could you ask for!

The Island is wonderful. The guided walks are well worth the $5. Without the assistance of your knowledgeable and observent guide you would not see or experience as much. Do the 1 1/2 hour guided Kawerau track, have lunch by the beautiful light house and then slowly meander back to the boat via the Wattle track stopping to watch birds bathing at the water trough.

We saw saddlebacks, robins, kokako, bellbird, stitch birds, tui, Takahe and learned so much.
The shop has wonderful items for sale and the sale goes to support the Island.

A wonderful experience for children, for a gold coin donation they get an activity book and if they complete 4 pages they earn a badge.

Definitely worth it to take the guided walk. We learned so much about the plants and birds, and saw many different types. Kind of regret that we didn't arrange for the overnight stay. Absolutely recommend this day trip to anyone who is interested in the outdoors.
