“Islands”

Absolute wonderland and well worth a visit. Pay the little extra for a guide as they notice birds that we would miss. Looking forward to returning and staying the night to hear the evening bird chorus and morning bird chorus. Back to naure. It was glorious.

“Rare birds close to the city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

The major draw of Tiritiri Matangi is that it is a DOC Wildlife Reserve which has public access, unlike many of them. The bird life on the island is extensive, and you will almost certainly see Stitchbird, Bellbird, Robins, Saddlebacks, Takahe, and if you are lucky Kokako. The populations of these protected birds are doing so well that I have heard recently that pairs are migrating to the mainland.

“Bird life on Tiritiri Matangi”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

We both thoroughly enjoyed this trip to an off shore open bird sanctuary.Iit was easy to find parking for our large campa close to the ferry at Gulf Harbour. The boat trip over was very enjoyable as it was a calm sunny day. Our guide Martin (once we were on the island) was informative and friendly and led us around the various tracks where we were thrilled to be able to see saddlebacks and the endangered kokako as well as other native birds in their natural habitat. The giant pohutakawa tree was a great sight. We enjoyed the shop at the top and and lunch watching the friendly wekas. This would be a lovely family outing and very good value for money spent. Highly recommended.

“Huge Tuis & other birds”

Tthis is a great place to visit and wander around amongst the beautiful birds. The view out to sea and also towards Auckland city is fantastic. Travel by ferry is easy and fun. A picnic on the lawn rounds off a great day.

“Must see, even though slightly expensive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2013 via mobile

Well worth the extra $5 for the 90 minute guided tour. The timing works out perfectly to follow the group in the morning after leaving at 9am and arriving at 10:20, then having lunch at the lighthouse and an afternoon to explore on your own freely until leaving at 3:30pm.

We are not bird lovers but we still found the island extremely interesting. There are many exotic animals and eye catching views to see.

Note that you should make a reservation in advance and they are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
